A court decision may help endangered orcas, but Alaskan fishermen are wary (Fern's Ag Insider)

This population of orcas may be the most closely studied whales in the world. “These animals have life histories similar to us,” said John Durban, an ecologist with Oregon State University who monitors orcas using drones deployed from a 24-foot Zodiak. Scientists name and closely monitor individuals throughout their lives. Young stay with their mothers into adulthood, and pods hunt cooperatively, play, and communicate through calls and whistles. “It’s very easy to identify with them,” Durban said.
 

Bees, sheep, crops: Solar developers tout multiple benefits (AP News)

A team led by Oregon State University researcher Maggie Graham reported this year that bees and other insects visit plants partly or totally shaded by panels. They also may pollinate crops in nearby fields, boosting yields.

Chunhuei Chi, director of the Center for Global Health at Oregon State University in the United States, told Deutsche Welle that China and Taiwan’s anti-epidemic policies are similar in that policymakers will tend to be conservative in their anti-epidemic policies due to political considerations, which is the so-called tendency to zero.

 

Black farmers group, Oregon State to give out 1 million donated hempseeds (Hemp Industry Daily)

A hemp crop science company has aligned with the National Black Farmers Association and Oregon State University to provide 1 million hempseeds to Black and Indigenous growers and farmers of color without capital investment.

Global Health Seminar: OSU’s Center for Global Health continues its 2021-22 seminar series with the lecture “World’s Children: Comfort After Crisis” by Lindsay Fox, an MPH graduate of OSU who will speak about her experience working with orphans and vulnerable children in the U.S. and abroad. Invasive species and international travel: Oregon Sea Grant's Sarah Vojnovich will explain how luggage is one way that invasive plants, insects and animals can enter the U.S. Learn what not to bring back from trips on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. at Common Fields in Corvallis. Hear from students about the Don’t Pack a Pest program for academic travelers and pick up some swag.

Science Pub: OSU Extension’s Christmas tree specialist will talk about what it takes to grow a quality Christmas tree at OSU’s Science Pub on Nov. 8, 6-7:30 p.m. The event is broadcast on YouTube Live. Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic: Preparedness Kits. Preparedness kits help bridge the emergency or disaster until normalcy can be restored. UPDATED! $15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is seeking applications that describe technology-based projects that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Proposals can include expenses for activities related to customer discovery, prototyping, student time, research, commercialization plan development and more. Each project should span nine months or less, beginning in January 2022. Proposals due by 5 p.m. Nov. 30.
