TRACE OSU testing: TRACE OSU is providing random COVID-19 testing by invitation at its Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Testing will take place in Corvallis in the Memorial Union Ballroom and at Reser ticket booths, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. In Newport, testing will be provided every other week beginning Jan. 19, Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. At OSU-Cascades, testing is provided only to students living and working on campus, and employees working on campus. “Everybody is kind of walking around with a little touch of PTSD,” said Kathy Becker-Blease, director of the School of Psychological Science at Oregon State University and an expert on developmental trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder. The pandemic has evolved and is behaving more like a “slow-moving natural disaster” than a health emergency, she said.
Oregon State University, Corvallis and Benton County will host a community webinar next week on COVID-19 in the area, the county announced in a press release Friday.
Luhui Whitebear, Oregon State University’s Native American Longhouse Eena Haws assistant director, said that these numbers are likely an undercount. “The number is definitely higher than that,” Whitebear said. “The problem is that there is not a clear, definitive [way of] knowing of how bad it is in Oregon right now.”
This type of training is very helpful for recognizing aromas, confirms Elizabeth Tomasino, an associate professor and sensory analyst at Oregon State University in Corvallis. "It is important for winemakers and sommeliers so they can understand what they can and cannot smell." She adds that it also has applications for consumers who would enjoy learning more about how to describe wine.
