In the Pacific Northwest, only two vertical evacuation structures have been built so far. One is an Oregon State University building in Newport, Ore. The other is a portion of Ocosta Elementary School in Washington. Other cities have considered but not yet built evacuation towers, including Seaside, Ore., which relocated its middle school and high school to hills east of town.
It’s the product of years of negotiations by a wide variety of stakeholders including conservation groups, timber operators, Native American tribes and Oregon State University. The bill appears to have unanimous support from the State Land Board, which is made up of Gov. Kate Brown, Treasurer Tobias Read and Secretary of State Shemia Fagan.
“All of these things that create real challenges for management create incredible opportunities for research,” Tom DeLuca, OSU College of Forestry dean and a committee member, told The Oregonian/OregonLive Editorial Board. On what would become the nation’s second-largest research forest, scientists and students can test forest practices to meet social, economic and ecological objectives that could be adopted in other forests, he said.

The 34th Annual Provost’s Literary Prize for undergraduate students at OSU is open for submissions. Keith Scribner in the School of Writing, Literature and Film and the screening committee are seeking help from faculty to identify candidates for the prize. The literary work can be fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction written for a general audience. The winner will be awarded $500 and on-campus publication. Community Hall Slope Project area updates: The west side of the Pharmacy building will be open starting Monday, Feb. 7. The area between the Pharmacy building, Joyce Collin Furman Hall and Gladys Valley will be closed to all access with the exception of the ADA entrance to the Pharmacy building. The ADA entrance to Joyce Collin Furman Hall will be from the east. Due to the extent of the construction, the exact ADA pathway to the Pharmacy building will vary (view map). These access updates will be in place through Thursday, Sept. 1.
