Potential hate crime being investigated on Oregon State University campus (KMTR)

Oregon State University's Public Safety Department is investigating a potential hate crime on campus. According to a post on their Facebook page, police were dispatched after reports of an assault near Tebeau Hall. (see also KEZIDemocrat-Herald)

OSU hosts discussion during Black History Month (My Central Oregon)

Nearly two years after the murder of George Floyd and promises made across the nation to combat racism, Black faculty and staff at Oregon State University are holding a panel to discuss what has happened in the intervening time and what that means for the country. “It’s 2022. Do Black Lives Really Matter?” will be held on Zoom and with a limited in-person audience from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28. (see also Corvallis Advocate)
 

Second nature? (Oregon Business)

Dr. Naomi Fitter, assistant professor in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University, currently develops support robots and other AI therapeutic machines that can respond to a user’s biological signals. Called haptic technology, robots, as well as wearable gloves and vests, can monitor a user’s biological signals through touch, assess them and respond.
 

Research uncovers impact of leisure activities on mental health during pandemic (Medical Xpress)

As people have turned to hobbies like reading and outdoor recreation to fill their days during the COVID-19 pandemic, recent research from Oregon State University found that engagement in leisure activities can help lower the risk of depression and improve mental well-being.

Climate scientist to speak in Bend (My Central Oregon)

Michael E. Mann, considered one of the world’s most influential climate scientists, will speak in Bend on March 31 about the urgent need to reverse decades of climate inaction and prevent the worst impacts of a climate crisis. “The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back our Planet,” hosted by Oregon State University – Cascades and Skeptoid Media, Inc., will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Riverhouse on the Deschutes.
 

Unexpected bottlenecks slow planting seedlings in Oregon's wildfire-impacted forests (Register-Guard)

"We're not distributing nearly as many as trees as I thought we could have," Oregon State University Extension Service Forester Glenn Ahrens said. "The fires were such a devastating event and they have a lot of things to deal with, starting with their homes and their livelihoods, and reforestation of the trees are a bit lower on the list of priorities."

NEW! 4th annual “Writing (PNW) Black History into Wikipedia” event: Valley Library is partnering with the national non-profit AfroCROWD for the editathon, which will focus on improving existing Wikipedia articles and creating new articles. Vaccination clinics: Benton County Health Department is holding five free vaccination clinics this coming week. $15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span 9 months or less, beginning in April 2022. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. on Feb. 28. Learn more and apply.

SNAP Eligibility Income Increase: SNAP is a federal program that provides eligible participants with $234 a month for grocery funding and the Oregon income eligibility criteria recently increased. The Human Services Resource Center at OSU raises awareness about this resource and provides application assistance to U.S. citizens who make less than $2147 a month, or are work-study eligible or have a 0 EFC score on their FAFSA. For information: SNAP.HSRC@oregonstate.edu.
