The west side of Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore., crumbled beneath a plume of dust, debris and smoke after engineers demolished it in January. Figuratively, the traditional layout of a college football stadium — two decks of vast, uninterrupted bleacher seating, a press box, and some suites — went up in smoke, too.
Bruce Menge has spent his career trying to detect ecological catastrophes. In the 1970s, as a marine biologist at the University of Massachusetts, he studied thriving blue mussel populations along the rocky New England coast. In 2014, he revisited those same sites and found, to his alarm, that ocean warming had crashed the ecosystem. More than half the mussels were gone, largely replaced by algae. Now, he’s on the West Coast at Oregon State University, watching as Oregon’s rocky intertidal zone approaches disaster.
“One of my colleagues calls it a Fitbit for trees,” said Oregon State University hydrologist Mark Raleigh, the first author of the study.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration announced Friday $4.4 million in drone research, education and training grants to seven universities, including Oregon State University. Research will focus on three areas: electromagnetic compatibility, detect and avoid classifications, and cybersecurity oversight.
“Our whole goal is to keep our livestock healthy and happy,” said Scott Duggan, OSU Extension livestock specialist for central Oregon.

Nationally since 2000, 85 fatal fires, claiming 118 lives, have occurred on college campuses, in Greek housing, or in off-campus housing within three miles of the campus. Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the United States, with direct property loss due to home fires estimated at $7.3 billion annually. Art-Science Student Fellowship Applications Due May 9: This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to explore the intersection of the arts and sciences. Fellows will develop a creative project informed by engagement with lab or field research, be awarded a $1,000 stipend, have ongoing mentorship, and receive a residency at the Cabin at Shotpouch Creek. Human-robot interaction: The Human-Machine Teaming Laboratory in Oregon State University's Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot interaction for simulated supervisor-based environments. Participants will complete a series of tasks that require controlling and monitoring a simulated remotely-piloted vehicle and will complete anonymous questionnaires. The experiment requires participants to complete one two-hour session. Participants who complete the entire evaluation will receive $30. Eat Free: @eatfreeosu is a Twitter account managed by the Human Services Resource Center student team. This account broadcasts information about open events on campus that also have food available. If your event is closed, but you have extra food, a message can be crafted asking students to show up at the end of your event. How Has the Pandemic Impacted Your Cat? We are looking for cats and their owners to help us understand how cat behavior and human-animal bonds were impacted by the pandemic. This OSU Human-Animal Interaction Lab research study will take place on the Oregon State University Corvallis campus (Withycombe Hall) and will include two behavioral attachment tests with your cat (taking approximately 20-30 minutes).
