Even before the pandemic turned the labor market on its head, the availability of school-aged child care was dismal. There were enough child care slots for just 16% of Deschutes County’s 6-to-12-year-olds, according to a study of 2020 availability by Oregon State University researchers.
“It’s worrisome for backyard flocks,” said Kurt Williams, director of the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University. “There’s no doubt about it.”
The Bright Side Project is a follow-up to OSU’s Punch Through Pandemics with Psychological Science online course, which reached nearly 3,700 people in 2020 with lessons about the psychological effects of stress and ways to counter it at the onset of the pandemic. NEW! Bi-Mart Autopay Program: Effective April 1, OSU’s Autopay agreement with Bi-Mart will end. As a result of this change, OSU employees will no longer be able to direct bill purchases from Bi-Mart to a department index. Bi-Mart has indicated they will not be entering into direct bill agreements with individual OSU departments. Starting in April, it is recommend to use a University Credit Card to make purchases from Bi-Mart. If needed, please reach out to the Travel & Expense Office if you need assistance obtaining a university card. Dogs sought for fiber study: The OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking dogs that have a history of chronic diarrhea for a research study examining the effect of fiber on the fecal microbiome and gut health. Participation in this study involves mixing a powder supplement on the dog food daily for four weeks, three visits to the hospital and a $50 Amazon gift card. The Truckenbrod Gallery at 517 SW 2nd St. in Corvallis is a contemporary art gallery managed by Joan Truckenbrod, digital media artist and professor emeritus from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She will make selections for an exhibition in her gallery from artworks in the Snell and Gladys Valley studios on Friday, April 22. COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing. NEW! Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, tree removal work along SW Washington Way between SW 30th and SW 26th streets is scheduled for Monday, March 21 through Thursday, March 24 (view map). Expect intermittent roadway and sidewalk closures related to the tree removal work. Flaggers will be on site to direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic when traffic interruptions occur. Along the north side of SW Washington Way, 27 red maple trees must be removed to accommodate the wider roadway and for the City of Corvallis water line replacement to occur. The 25-year-old trees will be replaced with new diverse trees and shrubs as part of the project’s landscape design. The Student Legacy Park South parking lot (lot #3293) will also be closed from March 21-24 for the tree removal work.
Power outages for multiple buildings March 22: For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, a series of planned power outages are scheduled for multiple buildings along or near SW Jefferson Way. Outages are scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. in the following buildings: Buxton Hall, Callahan Hall, Cauthorn Hall, Hawley Hall, McNary Hall, Poling Hall and Wilson Hall. Several other buildings will be without power and closed from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on March 22: Heckart Lodge, Kerr Administration Building, McAlexander Field House, McNary Dining Hall (the Service Center will be open), Reed Lodge, Snell Hall and West Dining Hall. To prepare for these outages, please turn off all computers, printers, copiers and other electronic devices before Tuesday. If you have an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS), also known as a battery back-up, please be sure to turn it off as well.
Ag. Life & Sciences supply fans shutdown: From 5:30-11 a.m. on March 23, the Ag. Life & Sciences building air fans will be shut down one at a time to perform preventive maintenance and change air filters Building occupants may notice slight pressure and air flow changes throughout the building. Fairbanks renovation: As part of the Fairbanks Hall Renovation Project, demolition of the old Fairbanks Annex existing concrete pad, along with the preparation and placement of new concrete for a new transformer pad by the Women’s Building, will occur onsite during the week of Spring Break from March 21-25. The sidewalk located between the Women’s Building and Fairbanks Hall will be temporarily closed at that time. There will be truck traffic in and out of the Fairbanks Hall worksite using the 35th Street/Jefferson Way route. Expect noise as existing concrete is broken up, demolished and hauled away. The concrete breaking activities will start no earlier than 8 a.m.
Steam shutdown: For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, a series of planned steam shutdowns are scheduled. The planned steam shutdowns will impact multiple buildings located along or near SW Jefferson Way in the Community Hall Slope Project work area. Planned steam shutdowns are scheduled March 23-26. Buildings include Callahan Hall, Gladys Valley Gymnastics Center, McNary Dining Hall, McNary Hall, Pharmacy Building and Wilson Hall.
