“Krill play such a fundamental role in the ecosystem, not just for the top predators, but also for smaller predators,” says Kim Bernard, an associate professor at Oregon State University who’s currently in Antarctica studying the crustaceans. “Almost everything down here feeds on them. And if they don’t feed directly on Antarctic krill, they’ll feed on something that does.”
The legislation, Senate Bill 955, provides $300,000 to fund the implementation of an AgriStress helpline in Oregon, administered through the Oregon State University Extension Service. Hamsher said the issue was dear to his heart because of the list of his family members, friends, neighbors and classmates who have lost their lives to suicide.
Using an analysis of more than 650 dam removal projects over a 55-year period, Oregon State University researchers have developed a tool to better predict dam removal costs, the college said.

OSU Engagement Conference registration and awards: Register by Aug. 21 for the inaugural OSU Engagement Conference, Sept. 5-6 at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center. Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Light in Disaster. Lighting is one of the most essential pieces of an emergency kit. While most people are familiar with flashlights, there are other options to consider. Never leave light sources burning or turned on when you are asleep (except glow sticks) or not present. Remember to store extra fuel or batteries, wicks, mantles, globes and other spare parts specific to your light sources in your emergency kit. Human-robot interaction: An evaluation is being conducted to study human-robot interaction for manipulating objects under the sea. Participants will be asked to operate a user interface that interacts with the simulated robot (while wearing sensors to measure your physiology) and to complete questionnaires. The entire study procedure is expected to take 1 hour and 45 minutes. You will receive a $50 gift card for completing the study. Blood sugar study: Researchers in the College of Health at OSU are studying the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on people at risk for high blood sugar. We are looking for study participants between the age of 18-59. The study involves several visits to the Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center in Corvallis over approximately four months. Recruiting NSF-Funded polar researchers: Polar STEAM is an NSF-funded program that supports broader impacts through matching educators, artists and writers with polar researchers to co-create educational and creative resources related to polar research. Annual cohorts also include mentorship and guidance on building your broader impacts toolkit. Applications are currently open for the 2024/25 field seasons in the Arctic and Antarctic. Virtual collaborations are also available and are well-suited for lab-based researchers, those conducting data work, remote monitoring, and field work that doesn’t lend itself bringing an additional person. NEW! External library noise: As part of the Valley Library Cell Tower Replacement project, crews will be mounting anchors into the Valley Library roof. This will create a loud, sudden and repetitive firework-like noise during the time period of Aug. 1-4. The noise will be audible inside the library as well as in the areas surrounding the library. NEW! ADA crosswalk ramp: As part of the Cordley Renovation Project, a new ADA crosswalk ramp will be installed at the northeast corner of NW 27th Street and NW Orchard Avenue. A pedestrian and ADA detour will be in place with appropriate signage.
NEW! 26th Street: As part of the Pedestrian/Bicycle Priority Zone project – Phase 1, SW 26th Street will be closed for restriping between SW Jefferson Way and SW Campus Way and between SW Campus way and NW Orchard Avenue Aug. 10-11. The ADA and service parking spots along SW 26th Street bordering the MU Quad will be closed. Sidewalk access will be open and east/west access on SW Campus and SW Jefferson Ways will be open.
Reser Stadium parking: As part of the Summer 2023 Parking Lot Renewal project, parking lots surrounding Reser Stadium will be closed in phases from July 24-Aug. 1. July 28-Aug. 1: Reser Stadium Lot and the western half of the LaSells Stewart Center West Lot closed (section between the stadium and SW Western Boulevard).
Campus Way: As part of the Withycombe Hall Renovation project, the north sidewalk on SW Campus Way between the East Greenhouses and SW 30th Street will be closed to pedestrian traffic through Aug. 31. Pedestrians may detour across Campus Way at the crosswalk located directly in front of the East Greenhouses or at the intersection with 30th Street and use the south sidewalk.
Kerr south parking lot: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot will be closed for construction activities from June 26-Sept. 27. The path running along the west side of the Kerr Administration Building will be closed along with the south entrance/exit to the parking lot and the ADA ramp. Other possible impacts include noise, dust and mud near the construction site.
Student Legacy Park: Student Legacy Park, including all fields, tennis facilities, basketball court and sand volleyball courts will be closed for resurfacing and turf replacement starting on Monday, June 19 and continuing through the summer. The sidewalk on the north side of Washington Way directly adjacent to Student Legacy Park will also be closed. Other possible impacts include noise, dust and mud near the construction site.
