Is beer good for you? Yakima Valley hops fuel promising medical research (Yakima Herald-Republic) 

Xanthohumol (zan-tho-hue-moll), a compound found in hops and beer, is the focus of research at the Linus Pauling Institute and the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University and at S.S. Steiner Inc., the Yakima Valley affiliate of the international Hopsteiner company. Scientists are looking at the potential for everything from cancer prevention to improving glucose tolerance, while studying ways to increase the concentration of the compound in hops.

OSU seed, cereal crop meetings go virtual; others canceled (Capital Press)

Oregon State University Extension’s fall seed and cereal crop production meetings are going virtual and the Oregon Seed League’s annual meeting has been canceled. Extending into next winter, the Oregon Ryegrass Growers Association meeting, held each January in Albany, also has been canceled.

NEW! Board of Trustees: The OSU Board of Trustees will meet from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, to consider the issuance of OSU revenue bonds and an adjustment to the Cordley Hall capital project budget. The board also will receive updates on the university’s COVID-19 response, budget, and public safety program. Given current COVID-19 guidance from the Governor’s Office, as well as university and county health officials, the meeting will be hosted through a remote conferencing service. The meeting is open to the public. The meeting agenda, options for joining the meeting, and instructions for providing comment during the board meeting’s general comment period and in a testimony period held before the board votes on each action item are located at this webpage. OSU Center for Advancing Diversity: The OSU Center for the Advancement of Women in Leadership is expanding and will be re-launching as the OSU Center for Advancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in Business at the start of the fall term. Housed in the OSU College of Business, the center provides programs for working professionals as well as OSU students, faculty and staff of any discipline or unit. The new focus for the center will be to accelerate the development of a business community that prioritizes and advances DEI, with a mission to empower students, alumni, business professionals and organizations with education, tools and training to advance DEI in the workplace. The center will continue to offer women's leadership programs and prioritize a gender equity lens with its work. Valley Library announces reopening: Beginning Sept. 8, Valley Library will be open during limited hours, and open hours will expand starting Sept. 14 to 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Spaces will be available for access to the OSU community by reservation only. Since spring term, OSU Libraries have maintained and expanded our digital collections and services to support remote work and research, and this virtual support will continue during fall term. SW Intramural Lane: For work related to the Cauthorn Hall fire suppression installation, SW Intramural Lane will be closed between SW Weatherford Place and SW 30th Street (view map). Demolition of Naval ROTC Armory: As part of the Washington Way Improvement Project, work related to the demolition of the Quonset Hut that served as the previous home of the Naval ROTC Armory is scheduled to start on Wednesday, Aug. 26 and continue through Thursday, Sept. 17.
