Roadmap for filling the gaps in forest pollinator research (Science Daily)

An international collaboration, led by Jim Rivers of Oregon State University, has established a roadmap for future research aimed at better understanding the role that managed conifer forests in temperate zones play for the conservation of pollinators such as bees, wasps, flies, beetles and butterflies.

Earther’s Maddie Stone reports that the scientists, led by Oregon State University marine geologist Bill Chadwick, initially noticed the surface of the structure was sediment free and venting a milky hydrothermal fluid, suggesting the still-cooling lava was fresh.
 

Water scarcity fuels tensions across the Middle East (NBC News)

The Island of Peace was a compromise enshrined in the 1994 deal that ended decades of an official state of war between Jordan and Israel — which also included a water-sharing component. Optimism over the Palestinian-Israeli conflict was running high, and at the time the treaty served as "a phenomenal example" of how "mutual understandings" could be found in the conflict-ridden region, according to Aaron Wolf, a geography professor at Oregon State University.

First Meal: A Talk by Artist and Professor Julie Green: Julie Green will discuss her new series of paintings that illustrate exonerees’ first meals on the outside after release from prison. With “First Meal,” developed in collaboration with the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, Green hopes to spark conversations about the uses, abuses and inequities of our criminal justice system. Volunteers wanted for environmental pollutant research study (Corvallis): If you are healthy, age 21-65, non-smoking person without kidney, liver or intestinal problems or bariatric surgery, you may qualify to participate. Females must be post-menopausal or surgically sterile. OSU ScholarDollars: Oregon State’s new online scholarship search and application system, ScholarDollars, is now accepting applications for more than $50 million in 2019-20 scholarship funds. OSU students may complete one application to be considered for more than 1,600 campus-based scholarship opportunities. Students are encouraged to submit their ScholarDollars applications between Nov. 1, 2018, and Feb. 1, 2019, to maximize the number of scholarships for which they will be considered. Call 541-737-1125 or visit https://scholarships.oregonstate.edu/scholardollars.

Recycle Right: What To Do with Cardboard: With recent changes in recycling, it’s more important than ever to recycle right. At OSU, cardboard is collected in designated outdoor containers due to its size, fire code, and pest management. This refers to material that is corrugated (contains multiple, wavy layers), whereas paperboard (such as a cereal box) can go in a standard “paper” recycling bin. Flatten and remove all packaging.
