Do high gas prices help reduce development on agricultural land? (AgDaily)

Researchers from Oregon State University, Montana State University, and the U.S. Forest Service found that falling gas prices and, to a lesser extent, rising income levels, drove land development from 1982 to 2000.

"They have the earthquake and the tsunami to deal with, and you know, they're only 15-20 minutes apart. On the other hand, the coast does not have high rise buildings. So, we don't have as much risk in the sense of collapsed buildings, but we also have the tsunami,” says Goldfinger, a professor at Oregon State University's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences.
 

U.S. Department of Energy announces $25 million for wave energy research off Oregon coast (gCaptain) 

In 2016, DOE partnered with Oregon State University to build the PacWave South test facility, a proposed $80 million open ocean wave energy test center to be located about six nautical miles off Newport, Oregon. The project was issued its research lease by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in February 2021, making it the nation’s first accredited, grid-connected, pre-permitted, open-water wave energy test facility approved in federal waters

Board of Trustees: The OSU Board will meet from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Jan. 28 in the Horizon Room of the Memorial Union. The Board will consider approval of the Presidential Leadership Profile to be used in the recruitment and search process for OSU’s next president, and items recommended for action by its committees. The Board will receive updates on the implementation of SP 4.0, the establishment of an Elliott State Research Forest and the 2022 Oregon legislative session. FYI Friday – The Basics of Savings and Retirement: This presentation will help participants understand more about the benefits of saving. We will address basic financial concepts such as compound interest and the fundamentals of investments, to help you understand the importance of setting long term goals to help you save. Music à la Carte: Olem Alves Trio. This Eugene-based jazz guitar trio led by Olem Alves features Tyler Abbott on bass with OSU’s Ryan Biesack (drum instructor and jazz ensemble director) on drums. Griggs Center grand opening: A grand opening celebration of the new Griggs Center for Black & Indigenous Student Success will take place Feb. 1, noon to 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 61. The grand opening of the center will introduce students to the services the office provides, as well as highlighting an honor roll of Black and Indigenous students who excelled academically this fall. NEW! New Exhibition: "Celebrate Oregon's Diversity" takes the opportunity to celebrate Oregon's diversity through its culture and landscape. Heavy Metal: Modernity, Craft, and Industry in 1960s Finnish Modernist Sculpture. Contemporary art historian Kirsi Peltomäki will present case studies of two Finnish women sculptors and two key exhibitions to explore how artistic modernism and social modernity intertwined in the 1960s to shape national identity and its representations. Beavers SAVE Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention. Learn how to reach out and help a friend. We can all help prevent suicide. This workshop will provide the skills you need to feel empowered to help or intervene with a friend or family member who is considering suicide. Jaime Lowe presents "Working the Line: How Prison Labor Intersects with Megafires." Join journalist Jaime Lowe, author of "Breathing Fire: Female Inmate Firefighters on the Front Lines of California's Wildfires," as she discusses connections between the prison system, firefighting, climate change, economic disparity and historical injustice. Lowe has been featured on This American Life, Radiolab, and NPR. She'll be speaking as part of Spring Creek Project's lecture series Lookout: Envisioning Futures with Wildfire on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. Learn more and register here.

Accessibility Basics for the Web: Learn how to make websites accessible to people with disabilities. Seed starting: The Science and Practice of Seed Starting: Secrets to Success When Growing by Seed will be presented by Dennis Brown, OSU Master Gardener, as part of the Growing Oregon Gardeners: Level Up Series. Women’s Leadership Lecture: The 2022 Susan J. McGregor Memorial Lecture features Georgia Lee Hussey, founder and CEO of Modernist Financial. Hussey’s address traces her path from sculptor and writer to CEO, believing that a company can thrive profitably by challenging conventional business mindsets, centering inclusivity and embracing “beginner’s mind” over traditional expertise. 7th Annual Dry Farming Collaborative Winter Convening: The OSU Extension Small Farms Program is hosting the 7th Annual Dry Farming Collaborative Winter Convening on Feb. 8 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. This year the meeting will be held virtually via Zoom and is open to those interested in learning about crop production with little to no irrigation. DPD Podcast Launch: The Difference, Power, and Discrimination Program has launched a new podcast, Transforming the College Classroom. This is a podcast for anyone interested in taking up teaching and learning in higher education from a justice-informed perspective in ways that are centered on a deep commitment to teaching all students. Every episode features interviews that explore teaching and learning for justice from multiple disciplinary, institutional and social positions. Design Industry Connect Feb. 23: OSU students and alumni creatives are invited to come together for an evening of networking during the OSU Design Network’s Industry Connect on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. This virtual event is free to students and alumni in innovation and design management, merchandising management, apparel design, interior design and graphic design. Traffic and Maintenance

West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work. The month-long closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 7. Please view the online map, which provides an overview of this location and appropriate detours to take. Direct access to the 20 & 21 greenhouses can be made at their north side doors.
