An international team of scientists led by two Oregon State University researchers, are calling for a different pathway to mitigate climate change that will also address social injustice. (see also Oregonian, KTVZ)
Old forests are also tremendously important for wildlife. Birds like the marbled murrelet and mammals like the red tree vole need them to survive, said Matthew Betts, a forest ecologist at Oregon State University. It has to do with the forest structure. Big branches unique to older trees, for example, provide support for nests, and the thick layers of canopy help retain water.
Beekeepers have been aware of European foulbrood disease for decades. However, its rapid resurgence over the last few years has many worried about the disease's potential to harm commercial food production on bee-dependent crops throughout the country. That's according to Ramesh Sagili, an apiculturist and a professor of agriculture at Oregon State University. "We know the basics," he told Axios. "But what we don't know are the triggers."

Onboarding forums held via Zoom: The President and Provost’s Leadership Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (PPLC) is hosting another onboarding forum via Zoom for employees of color on Jan. 12. We are seeking to identify additional ways to support the success and belonging of new employees of color. The forum is from 9-10 a.m. on Jan. 12 and registration is required. NEW! OSU International Film Festival: Covenant of the Salmon People. "Covenant of the Salmon People" is a 60-minute documentary portrait of the Nez Perce Tribe as they continue to carry out their ancient promise to protect the Chinook salmon. The film explores the intertwined fate of the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce), salmon and the landscape from which both evolved. 6 p.m., Jan. 17 at Darkside Cinema in Corvallis; admission is free.
Experiencing Ancient and Modern-day Agriculture in the Heart of Mexico: Join Jose Manuel Uscanga Aguirre from the College of Agricultural Sciences to learn more about a 4-credit, two-week program in Mexico studying the development of agricultural production from pre-Columbian, Aztec and Mayan civilizations from June 16-27. The Little Gallery Presents: Afghanistan Before the Wars - Photography by Mark Svendsen. The narrative for this exhibit is to acquaint Oregonians with the native beauty of Afghanistan and the universal humanity of its people, and to impart a sense of what life there was like when the country was at peace half a century ago. NEW! Adulting 101 Offered through OSU Extension 4H: Join Lane County 4-H for the Adulting 101 series. This five-week course is designed for all teens ages 12-18 in Lane County. Classes include career readiness, budgeting basics, self-defense, emergency preparedness, CPR and first aid certification, food preservation basics, mental health and wellness care, cooking basics and car basics. Adulting 101 is designed to provide teens skills and confidence for entering post-high school life. Internationalization Grant: The Office of Global Engagement has announced the Internationalization Grant application cycle for 2023-24, opening Dec. 1 and closing Jan. 31. This year, the grant is offered in three tracks, aligned with Oregon State University’s new strategic plan “Prosperity Widely Shared,” focusing on research and innovation, global and intercultural learning and career and workforce development. FourSight Mindset Reveal is a new workshop presented by the Office of University Human Resources that dives deep into the way that we solve problems together.
