Night shift linked to insomnia and stress symptoms in nurses, study finds (McKnights Long-Term Care News) 

In addition, Black nurses made up 23% of the poor overall sleep group, although they represented only 7% of the total sample. This could be due to experiences of discrimination, which have been shown to be related to poor sleep health, said co-author Jessee Dietch, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology at Oregon State University.
 

New research center created to protect kids from environmental health risks (OPB)

The federal government recently awarded nearly $5 million to Oregon State University to launch a new center that will turn environmental health research into practical applications to protect children from lead, arsenic and other toxins in the environment.

Music à la Carte: Jade Hails, percussion. OSU Music alumnus Jade Hails returns to campus to perform on the Music à la Carte Concert Series. Hails' program will feature transcriptions of hallmark composers juxtaposed against the seemingly avant-garde works of theatrical percussion. Feb. 4 at noon, Memorial Union Lounge. Anthropology Lecture Series: Agustín Fuentes of Princeton University will give a lecture on “Challenging the ascription of contemporary normativity to patterns and processes in human evolution.” He will speak on Friday, Feb. 4 from noon to 12:50 p.m. All lectures are accessible via Zoom in real time: beav.es/Uy4.

University Budget Committee: The Committee will meet this Friday, Feb. 4 from 2-3:30 p.m. via Zoom. The UBC is OSU’s advisory body to the Provost for recommendations on tuition rates, budget priorities and budget policies. The 34th Annual Provost’s Literary Prize for undergraduate students at OSU is open for submissions. Keith Scribner in the School of Writing, Literature and Film and the screening committee are seeking help from faculty to identify candidates for the prize. The literary work can be fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction written for a general audience. The winner will be awarded $500 and on-campus publication. Submission details can be found here. Deadline: Tuesday, Feb. 15. The Provost will announce the winner in May 2022.

Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Community Hall Slope Project area updates: The west side of the Pharmacy building will be open starting Monday, Feb. 7. The area between the Pharmacy building, Joyce Collin Furman Hall and Gladys Valley will be closed to all access with the exception of the ADA entrance to the Pharmacy building. The ADA entrance to Joyce Collin Furman Hall will be from the east. Due to the extent of the construction, the exact ADA pathway to the Pharmacy building will vary (view map). These access updates will be in place through Thursday, Sept. 1.

Reser: For work related to the Completing Reser Stadium project, the South Reser parking lot entrance/exit to SW 26th Street will be temporarily moved to the south to allow for construction of the new wellness center (view map). Both entrance and exit will be limited to one lane with a detour in place once in the parking lot. The existing crosswalk will be closed and a new temporary crosswalk will be added across SW 26th Street.

West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work. The month-long closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 7. Please view the online map, which provides an overview of this location and appropriate detours to take. Direct access to the 20 & 21 greenhouses can be made at their north side doors.
