OSU study shows impact of leisure activities on mental health during COVID (Central Oregon Daily)

As people have turned to hobbies like reading and outdoor recreation to fill their days during the COVID-19 pandemic, recent research from Oregon State University found that engagement in leisure activities can help lower the risk of depression and improve mental well-being.
 

China paints picture of African partnership with gleaming public works (South China Morning Post)

Oregon State University historian Itamar Dubinsky has studied China’s sporting projects in Africa and identified a similar strategy. He said the grants and soft loans China gave to its African counterparts to build sports stadiums enabled Beijing to rebuild and strengthen its ties with them, easing access to the raw materials vital for the Chinese economy.

California celebrates its history as a 'free state.' But there was slavery here. (KQED) 

"California did the opposite," said Stacey L. Smith, professor of history at Oregon State University. "Not just cooperating with the Fugitive Slave Act, the federal one from 1850, but passing its own 1852 Fugitive Slave Act that essentially was a supplement to that federal act and pledged that the state would help the federal government do everything it could to help protect slave holders and not freedom seekers."

Timely Teaching Tips: Are some of your students feeling overwhelmed in the last half of the term? Sharing the DAM Good Self-Care Packet can highlight the importance of managing stress. Consider setting aside 5-10 minutes in class for students to fill out the Self-Care Plan (page 4) so they can identify self-care strategies to navigate stressful times.

Anthropology Lecture Series: "Resisting the Settler Gaze in Indigenous California," a talk by Luhui Whitebear. Settler records and settler constructions of what it means to be have long impacted Indigenous people of California. CTL Sparkshop – Engaging students in learning through problems: Design and implementation strategies. Problem-based learning (PBL) engages students in conducting research, integrating theory and practice, and applying knowledge and skills to analyze and solve authentic problems in the discipline. $15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span 9 months or less, beginning in April 2022. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. on Feb. 28. Learn more and apply.

SNAP Eligibility Income Increase: SNAP is a federal program that provides eligible participants with $234 a month for grocery funding and the Oregon income eligibility criteria recently increased. The Human Services Resource Center at OSU raises awareness about this resource and provides application assistance to U.S. citizens who make less than $2147 a month, or are work-study eligible or have a 0 EFC score on their FAFSA. For information: SNAP.HSRC@oregonstate.edu.
