Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media. Content appearing includes timely news and feature stories from broadcast, print and online sources. Occasionally, opinion pieces and first-person columns appearing in mainstream media outlets that are written by faculty members and pertain to their academic or professional expertise may be included based on their unique, informative value, timeliness and space constraints. It is not the policy of OSU Today to include Letters to the Editor. Occasionally, articles highlighted in OSU Today may either be subscription-only or behind a paywall if a maximum number of articles has been reached that month. Many subscription-only publications, like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, can be accessed by anyone with an OSU email account through the search function on the OSU Libraries home page, which grants free access to many publications. See https://library.oregonstate.edu/ and click on 1Search.

Another power-up for Delta: A person infected with this variant can pass it along sooner than a person infected with a different strain. Originally, it took six days after an initial infection for a person’s body to produce enough virus to infect others, said Chunhuei Chi, director of the Center for Global Health at Oregon State University. Now, the Delta variant has cut that timeline to just four days, allowing to spread through communities even faster than before.
Researchers are closely monitoring the risk from the delta variant. Brett Tyler, director of Oregon State University’s Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing, said a couple factors in the variant “seem to be game-changers.” For one, it can spread about six times faster than the original strain of COVID-19, making it extremely infectious, on a par with chicken pox.
Agriculture is a major water pollution culprit, thanks to runoff from fertilizers and pesticides, increased erosion and development. The EPA found that agriculture is the top known polluter of rivers and streams and a significant polluter of lakes and ponds. But a big new survey from researchers at Oregon State University says it doesn’t have to be that way. The study looked specifically at how agricultural practices can affect these waterways and what low-hanging fruit might be available to lessen the negative effects.

The rapid snowmelt that occurred in spring and early summer has left midsummer snowmelt at historic lows, said Larry O’Neill, an associate professor at the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. What’s more, this snow season — with its unusually rapid melt-off — is going to become the new normal, he said. (see also Oregonian)

Dr. William Ripple, lead author of the assessment and distinguished professor of ecology at Oregon State University, described the world’s “lack of progress” since November 2019 as “frustrating and scary.” “Most of the factors that we track, we call them “planetary vital signs,” have gotten worse. It’s surprising to me that climate change impacts are happening so fast around the world. Just in the last two weeks, every day we’ve seen another climate-related disaster—either with fires or floods or drought or heat.” (see also The Punch)
