New study shows value of agritourism in the Willamette Valley (KLCC)

A new OSU study, “An Initial Economic Impact Estimate of Agritourism in Oregon's Willamette Valley,” was created to inform the ongoing conversation about the future of agritourism in Oregon. The study found that approximately 4,000 of the 18,679 farms in the Willamette Valley were engaged in agritourism, attracting between 3.7 million and 13.7 million people to farms in the region each year.
 

A new way to control pests and minimize pesticides (Metro News)

Oregon State University has created a resource, Solve Pest Problems, to help people tackle many common pests in the Pacific Northwest. The website provides effective, low-risk, science-based information for preventing and dealing with pests.

A Conversation with Alexander Lloyd Blake: Alexander Lloyd Blake, founder and artistic director of Tonality Choir, will appear at 7 p.m. on April 12 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Tonality is an award-winning choral ensemble focused on spreading a message of unity, peace and social justice. During this event, Blake will join historian and ethnomusicologist Kelly Bosworth on stage for a conversation about using music as a conduit for environmental awareness and change and social change more broadly. Bosworth is assistant professor of public history & popular music at Oregon State University. Free. More info here.

Taiwanese film screening: The Taiwan Student Association and the Chiu Program for Taiwan Studies will host a film-screening of "BIG," the newest film by the Taiwanese director Wei Te-sheng, at 1 p.m., April 13 in room 128 of LINC. Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Tonality: “You Are Not Alone,” directed by Alexander Lloyd Blake, will be performed by Tonality at 7 p.m., April 13 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Tonality creates gorgeous concerts focusing on issues rarely present in choral music. At PRAx, Tonality takes on the topic of mental health awareness. A pre-concert program puts the spotlight on the community and OSU mental health providers. This evening is dedicated to them. Film Screening of The Wonder and the Worry: Tickets on sale now for a sneak preview of “The Wonder and the Worry,” at 7 p.m., April 17-18 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. This documentary film traces the fragmentation and upheaval in photojournalism and its impact on one of the world’s most iconic publications: National Geographic magazine. The film delves into digital disruption and the power of environmental storytelling as it follows the intertwined careers of Chris Johns, OSU alumnus and former National Geographic editor, and his daughter Louise, a working freelance photographer. Pianist Aaron Diehl + The Aaron Diehl TrioTickets are on sale now to see virtuoso pianist Aaron Diehl and his ensemble perform at 7 p.m., April 20 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. The concert will demonstrate the range of the new Steinway Concert Grand piano in PRAx. Prior to intermission, Diehl will play solo, classical piano. After intermission, Diehl will play in a jazz-informed mode with his trio. Tickets $25-50; students $5.

NEW! Overcoming Overdose @ OSU: OSU Student Health's Alcohol & Other Drug Prevention team will host a lunch-and-learn workshop for students and staff, noon to 1 p.m. April 4, in MU 109. Overdose deaths among youth and young adults have increased in recent years, and the most common drugs involved are synthetic opioids including fentanyl. This workshop will allow students and staff to actively participate by providing resources (including Narcan kits and face shields for CPR), preventative education related to substance misuse, and an opportunity to positively impact the resiliency of our student population. Lunch provided for the first 50 registered guests.

NEW! Get Practical About Podcasting: How to be a good host or guest: How do we harness podcasting for science communication? This panel presentation and workshop will give you practical advice on how you can use podcasting as a way to communicate science. Panelists will include Rachel Robertson (science communicator) and Desirée Tullos (professor) from College of Engineering. Undergraduate research session: Are you an international undergraduate student eager to dive into the world of research and high-impact opportunities? Corvallis Science Pub: Sean Newsom, an integrative metabolic physiologist with the College of Health, works to develop new and effective strategies to help regulate blood sugar and lower risk for cardiometabolic disease. His laboratory has recently discovered new benefits of a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes that may improve muscle metabolism and promote healthy aging. Forest weed management: OSU Extension Service is offering a Forest Weed Management Field Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 13 at the Hopkins Demonstration Forest, 16750 S. Brockway Rd., Oregon City. This field day will cover principles and practices of vegetation management for establishing and maintaining trees in forestry and forest restoration. Key topics include vegetation management with herbicides, non-chemical methods and integrated pest management approaches for selecting and combining methods. Scholarships available: Applications for PCOSW scholarships to fund FY24 projects are now being accepted. The President’s Commission on the Status of Women provides funding to faculty, students and staff who are pursuing professional development, research, outreach or creative projects related to gender equity issues. The maximum amount offered is $1,000, although scholarships average $300, and funds are paid by reimbursement. Applications are due April 5. This year's Soundbox will feature works, live performances, emergent arts and improvisational practice that embody DIY approaches, offer real-time solutions and utilize improvisation as a vital tool for addressing pressing global issues identified by the United Nations. IT awards: The IT Recognition Committee welcomes nominations for the 2024 OSU IT Annual Awards acknowledging the dedication and commitment of OSU IT community members in one of six areas.  Information on the nomination process and descriptions of each award can be found on the IT Recognition Committee website. Traffic and Maintenance

Philomath lane closures on U.S. 20 beginning March 2024: Drivers in Philomath will see lane closures with flaggers helping to direct traffic on Main Street between 11th and 14th streets. Phased road repair and repaving work will begin March 2024 and continue through the summer. During the lane closures, there will be times when traffic is restricted on 11th, 12th and 14th streets.

Pride Center: As part of the Pride Center Renovation project, the entrance to the B2 parking lot on SW A Avenue (west of the Pride Center) will be closed daily from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., April 1-5. Vehicles will be able to exit only from this lane. Alternate entrances to the parking lot will be available on SW 17th Street and SW 15th Street.
