In northern Yellowstone National Park, saplings of quaking aspen, an ecologically important tree in the American West, are being broken by a historically large bison herd, affecting the comeback of aspen from decades of over-browsing by elk. Findings of the U.S. National Science Foundation-supported research led by Luke Painter of Oregon State University were published in Ecology and Evolution.
A 2020 study by Oregon State University researchers published in the Journal of Hydrology found that the conversion of old-growth forests to farms of Douglas fir trees significantly affected streams in the Northwest.
In a needs assessment survey, meetings and personal contact with Oregon State University Extension Service, western Oregon growers have been clear about the challenge of growing plants that will perform well in a climate that is increasingly unpredictable.

Hawk watch: Raul Santiago Rosa says, “I was with Cade Jobe helping in his smoked hop project and I found this beautiful red-tailed hawk. NEW! EECB Fall Seminar Series: Zanethia Barnett is a research fisheries biologist for the USDA Forest Service. She is a subject-matter expert in aquatic ecology and population genetics. Barnett’s research focuses on understanding factors that impact the structure of aquatic communities and genetic populations, quantifying the effects of human induced disturbances on aquatic systems and improving the understanding of life history and distribution of aquatic organisms. Pacific madrone tree workshop coming to Roseburg: Participants will learn about the west’s pacific madrone, the largest flowering tree of the family Ericaceae, at “All About Arbutus: A workshop covering pacific madrone from A to Z". Oregon ContraceptiveCare (CCare) is a program funded through a grant from the Centers for Medicaid Services and the Oregon Department of Human Services that allows Student Health Services to provide FREE reproductive health care and contraceptive services to OSU students who meet certain income criteria. Comment period extended to Wednesday, Nov. 8: An updated draft Forest Management Plan for the Elliott State Research Forest has been released and the public comment period is now open. Since early 2019, OSU and the Oregon Department of State Lands have been working collaboratively to explore transforming the Elliott State Forest into a publicly owned research forest. Review the draft plan and provide your comments.

Campus Way: The schedule for this project has changed. As part of the West Greenhouse Improvement project, sections of the north sidewalk along SW Campus Way will be closed Oct. 19-Oct. 20. Phase 1 will impact the area between the Seed Laboratory and the West Greenhouses. Phase 2 will impact the area just west of the Seed Laboratory. Master Gardener and Small Farms Program Coordinators: The Division of Extension and Engagement and the Extension Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Program invite applications for two Master Gardener and Small Farms Program Coordinator positions. These are 12-month, full-time, professional faculty positions. One position, posting #P07410UF, is based at the OSU Extension Service Tillamook County office in Tillamook. The other position, posting #P07411UF, is based at the OSU Extension Service Clatsop County office in Astoria. These Master Gardener and Small Farms Coordinators provide leadership for the county Master Gardener volunteer programs and for programming related to commercial and non-commercial small farms.
