To produce these estimates, The New York Times worked with two leading remote sensing scientists, Corey Scher of the City University of New York Graduate Center and Jamon Van Den Hoek of Oregon State University, to analyze data from radar satellites that can detect small changes in the built environment.
It was seven or eight years ago that Dawn Moyer noticed that an odd silence had begun to fall across the campus of Oregon State. In her decade as a student adviser there, the school had always been alive with conversation. No more. Moyer would step into a full classroom, and it would be silent. She’d walk down a crowded hallway, and no one would be talking.
Oregon State University chemistry researcher Xiulei “David” Ji is an author of a new study that shows iron can be used to replace metals that are scarce, expensive and can be environmentally damaging to extract.
The study by Oregon State University scientists, involving four capes in Oregon and California, suggests these communities of species may have low resilience to climate change. Findings were published Monday in Nature Ecology & Evolution.

McDonald-Dunn Research Forest Community Input Session: The College of Forestry invites you to the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest Community Input Session from 6-8 p.m., June 5 in PFSC 117. Remote participation available via Zoom. A new plan is being developed to guide management of the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest. After nearly two years of work, we have developed a suite of “management strategies” that will serve as the foundation for forest management. We now need to make decisions on how these strategies will be overlaid across the forest. At this session, we will provide an overview of decisions made to date and request your input on how we allocate land within the forest. All are welcome to attend. Educational Talk by Holocaust Survivor Ben Midler: Ben Midler, now 96 years old, spent his teenage years enduring six Nazi camps, including Auschwitz. He is also the last living survivor of the Bialystok ghetto. Midler will share his experiences with OSU students and community members via Zoom at 6 p.m., June 5. A Q&A session will follow his talk. This event is made possible by the Oregon State University Holocaust Memorial Committee.
A Conversation with John Green: "A World Without Tuberculosis." As a part of an International Speaker Series hosted by WorldOregon, John Green, New York Times bestselling author, will be presenting a lecture on the prevention and cure of tuberculosis at 7 p.m., June 5 at Revolution Hall in Southeast Portland. Blended Learning Faculty Fellows: CTL is accepting nominations and self-nominations for a 2024-25 Blended Learning Faculty Fellow. Graduate opportunities: Oregon Sea Grant is currently accepting applications for its spring graduate-level opportunities, featuring the Oregon Natural Resource Policy Fellowship (NRPF) and the Malouf Marine Studies Scholarship. The NRPF provides hands-on experience in natural resource policy at the state level, while the Malouf Scholarship supports graduate students conducting societally relevant coastal research applicable to Oregon. Volunteers Needed for The Great Move-Out: Each year OSU collects donated items from students who no longer need them and distributes those reusable goods to non-profits in our community – usually totaling more than 20 tons of items. OSU Surplus needs your help to make the Great Move-Out Donation Drive a success again this year – together we can improve our campus and community and keep reusable goods out of the landfills. Impact the future of online education through research: Each year, the OSU Ecampus Research Unit funds projects, up to $25,000 each, to support the research, development and scholarship efforts of faculty in online education. Many OSU colleagues have had transformative experiences in the Ecampus Research Fellows Program. Recent fellows studies highlight the ways in which these projects have advanced research in online/hybrid education. Campus Way: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place will be closed May 29-June 10. The closure is necessary to allow for crane activity related to the project. Unlike recent, intermittent closures related to the project, this will be a continuous closure of Campus Way. The Kelley Engineering Center south entrance will also be closed. The north sidewalk and both bicycle lanes in this section of Campus Way will be closed during this time period.
