The interdisciplinary research team used 10 years of tagging data from the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University to determine daily blue whale movements of 60 individual whales in the California Current Ecosystem, and then compared that with satellite-based measurements of ocean productivity.

OSU Science on Tap: Oregon State University researcher Jane Ishmael will present “Marijuana as Medicine,” an exploration of trends in marijuana use and recent progress in understanding how cannabinoids act on the body. Jazz ensemble: The Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble will present “From Maxville to Vanport” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Memorial Union Ballroom. “From Maxville to Vanport” is a new multi-media concert of songs and video from the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble featuring vocalist Marilyn Keller. It tells the story of two little-known Oregon towns and the diverse residents that made them unique. The performance includes music by Ezra Weiss, text by Renee Mitchell and video by Kalimah Abioto created in a community-guided process. The OSU Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ryan Biesack, will also perform at the show. The event is free and open to the public, though reservations are encouraged. Traipsin' Global On Wheels event: Traipsin' Global on Wheels (was established in August of 2018 by Ming Michelle Canaday. TGOW was created as a space where individuals with disabilities know how to access information and inquire about fitness. TGOW has already released a series of videos on how to stay fit in a wheelchair. In addition, this program encourages individuals with disabilities to be worldly. TGOW cultivates a group of healthy, worldly and informed advocates that will accept and perhaps even embrace their disability, and advocate for equity and justice for people with various disabilities. Tap Talks Corvallis: Help Make a Better World Map with NASA Scientists: Two researchers from OSU’s Center for Research on Lifelong STEM Learning, Heather Fischer and Peder Nelson, will present NASA’s new volunteer science opportunity, “Land Cover: Adopt a Pixel.” The project is a part of GLOBE Observer, a volunteer science program that lets you contribute meaningful data to NASA and the science community. The new Land Cover project enables volunteer scientists  to photograph – with smartphones – the landscape, identify the kinds of land cover they see, and then match their observations to satellite data. OSU Cycling Club Home Race: Sports clubs and the OSU Cycling Club are hosting their annual Randall Fox Beaver Omnium as part of the USA Cycling Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference on March 9-10. Races include a road race and time trial on March 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a criterium on March 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All race events are free to watch.
