During a conversation with Oregon State University President Jayathi Murthy, Huang called AI a “new industrial revolution... because an industrial revolution produces something new that was impossible to produce in the past.”
“The parenting styles are very similar, independent of whether we’re talking about dogs or whether we’re talking about human children, because we’re focused on the human caregiver’s behavior,” Monique Udell, a professor at Oregon State University studying human-animal interactions, told me. And, as Udell’s research has shown, the ideal parenting style—authoritative parenting—is the same for dogs and kids.
Jerolmack is part of the Legged Autonomous Surface Science in Analog Environments Project, also known as the LASSIE Project. The NASA-funded, collaborative effort consists of engineers and scientists from a number of universities including Oregon State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Pennsylvania and Texas A&M University.
Walters’ work is part of a multistate blueberry pollination project funded by a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Research Initiative. She got the cooling idea from an Oregon State University trial that applied overhead irrigation to blueberries to protect them from heat damage during summer ripening. The OSU researchers discovered that brief periods of overhead irrigation decreased temperatures in blueberry canopies by 5 to 10 degrees.
I don’t know what I expected when I got in line Thursday for opening night of Mrs. Krishnan’s Party at the Ray Theater. I wanted to go for one simple reason: It was the first theatrical performance to be hosted in the PRAx — the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts — which opened earlier this month on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis.

Dominant Design and Disruptive Production Innovation Seminar: Frank Koppenhagen, visiting professor in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering (MIME), will give an overview of his responsibilities and activities at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. Koppenhagen will introduce new perspectives on disruptive product innovation based on the creation of a dominant design. He will speak from 4-5 p.m. April 17 in Rogers 226.
Film Screening of The Wonder and the Worry: Tickets on sale now for a sneak preview of “The Wonder and the Worry,” at 7 p.m., April 17-18 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. This documentary film traces the fragmentation and upheaval in photojournalism and its impact on the world’s most iconic publication: National Geographic magazine. The film delves into digital disruption and the power of environmental storytelling as it follows the intertwined careers of Chris Johns, OSU alumnus and former National Geographic editor, and his daughter Louise, a working freelance photographer. Take Back the Night: Take Back the Night is an internationally recognized event held to protest sexual violence in all its forms and to provide a safe, confidential space for survivors of sexual violence to share their stories. This year's Take Back the Night at OSU will be held from 7-10 p.m., April 25 in the SEC Plaza and will feature a rally with keynote speakers and student performers, a march and a survivor speakout. There will be an exception made to OSU's responsible employee reporting requirements for this event regarding any disclosures of sexual assault. Confidential CAPS counselors and survivor advocates from CAPE and CARDV will be on site to provide support and connection to resources.
PRAx presents Las Cafeteras: Enjoy the electric sound and energy of Las Cafeteras on April 28 at 7 p.m. in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone), and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish, and Spanglish and add a remix of sounds, from rock to hip-hop to rancheras. Las Cafeteras play music as a vehicle to build bridges among different cultures and communities, creating “a world where many worlds fit.” Their Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. Four-time GRAMMY winners Eighth Blackbird: PRAx Presents Eighth Blackbird and the OSU Wind Ensemble on May 2 at 7 p.m. in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Eighth Blackbird sextet has been hailed as “one of the smartest, most dynamic ensembles on the planet” by the Chicago Tribune. These pioneers in creative contemporary music are the founders of the Eighth Blackbird Creative Lab and the Chicago Artists Workshop. PRAx and the Office of the Provost present Okaidja Afroso: Experience Okaidja Afroso on May 4 at 7 p.m. in Detrick Hall at PRAx. OSU Extension to offer calving school: The OSU Extension Service will host two calving schools in Corvallis this year,1:30-5 p.m. April 19 and 1:30-5 p.m. April 22. These classes are designed for ranchers or farm workers who are new to calving. Topics will include nutritional and management strategies, calving facilities, the calving process, newborn calf care and dystocia, along with a hands-on activity. 2024 CEOAS Earth Day Lecture: Bold Solutions, Better Planet. Three alums from the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences will challenge the notion that disasters are "natural” and address how deeply divided societies understand, prepare for and cope with environmental change and disasters. ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training): ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop; anyone 18 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. Spring Bike Challenge, May 1-31, 2024, Corvallis Campus: Form a team of friends, co-workers or classmates to join OSU's annual Spring Bike Challenge. Teams ride in a friendly campus-wide competition to see who can bike the most days in May. All biking skill levels are welcome. Taste Sensitivity Study: We are looking for participants for a research study examining how hunger state influences taste sensitivities to carbohydrates. Participants must be healthy, non-smokers and non-diabetic, aged 18-45. The study will involve performing taste sensitivity tests before and after eating a provided meal. Bring Your Kids to Campus Day: Registration is now open on the BYKTCD website. The Family Resource Center is excited to welcome you to this fun family day on Friday, April 19. This OSU community event is a way to celebrate family, the importance of education, and to highlight campus as a place where parents can share their work and studies, and families may spend the day together.
2024 Faculty Innovator Award: Deadline is this Friday, April 19. Be sure to get your nominations in. This award honors an outstanding Oregon State University inventor who has made a contribution leading to commercialization that significantly impacts their field and society. The Awardee will receive a $5,000 prize and desktop award. The Awardee’s department/unit will also receive $5,000.
NEW! Dixon Rec: Construction and construction-related activities will be taking place at the Dixon Recreation Center main entrance sidewalk on 26th Street (see map) April 18-May 9, for evacuation and equipment movement. The entrance will remain open, but fencing will be placed by OSU contractors to separate Dixon Rec patrons from construction equipment. Construction noise may be noticed during normal business hours.
