The estate of a Pulitzer-Prize-winning author’s son has awarded Oregon State University with $850,000 for its writing program.
Chris Adlam with the Oregon State University Extension Service said, “Fires are burning more and more land every year and getting hotter and hotter every year, killing more and more trees over large areas.”
The Oregon State University community donated the equivalent of 467,777 meals as part of the university’s annual food drive, event organizers announced last week.

NEW! PRAx Presents Las Cafeteras: Enjoy the electric sound and energy of Las Cafeteras at 7 p.m. April 28 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish and Spanglish and add a remix of sounds. NEW! PRAx and the Office of the Provost Present Okaidja Afroso: Experience Okaidja Afroso at 7 p.m., May 4. in Detrick Hall at PRAx. In “Jaku Mumor,” multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and dancer Okaidja Afroso collaborates with Indigenous Ga-Dangme fishermen to share their a cappella singing and chants in his music and via film. “Wings” by Holly Andres: Holly Andres is a photographer and director known for her stylized cinematic scenarios. Her work has appeared in galleries and museums from Barcelona, Istanbul and Bogota, to New York, San Francisco and Atlanta with viewers drawn to her often dark and mysterious or bright and witty imagery. Andres’ photos will be on display in in Fairbanks Hall from April 8-May 19.

A Conversation with Alexander Lloyd Blake: Alexander Lloyd Blake, founder and artistic director of Tonality Choir, will appear at 7 p.m. on April 12 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Tonality is an award-winning choral ensemble focused on spreading a message of unity, peace and social justice. During this event, Blake will join historian and ethnomusicologist Kelly Bosworth on stage for a conversation about using music as a conduit for environmental awareness and change and social change more broadly. Beaver BarCamp 2024: This is an informal un-conference that has been hosted by the OSU Open Source Lab since 2006. We are excited to bring this live in-person event where attendees can participate in sessions throughout the day or propose their own talk on a project, hobby or research interest. Hatfield Marine Science Day: Hatfield Marine Science Day is an annual science fair and open house featuring the marine science programs and research at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. You can talk with researchers about their marine science exhibits, get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Hatfield campus, enjoy a show on the sounds of the sea, and learn about the latest advances in whale research from keynote speakers KC Bierlich and Clara Bird from the GEMM Lab's GRANITE Project. Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Tonality: Tickets on sale now for “You Are Not Alone,” directed by Alexander Lloyd Blake at 7 p.m., April 13 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Tonality creates gorgeous concerts focusing on issues rarely present in choral music. At PRAx, Tonality takes on the topic of mental health awareness. Film Screening of The Wonder and the Worry: Tickets on sale now for a sneak preview of “The Wonder and the Worry,” at 7 p.m., April 17-18 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. This documentary film traces the fragmentation and upheaval in photojournalism and its impact on the world’s most iconic publication: National Geographic magazine. The film delves into digital disruption and the power of environmental storytelling as it follows the intertwined careers of Chris Johns, OSU alumnus and former National Geographic editor, and his daughter Louise, a working freelance photographer. Pianist Aaron Diehl + The Aaron Diehl Trio: Tickets are on sale now to see virtuoso pianist Aaron Diehl and his ensemble perform at 7 p.m., April 20 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. The concert will demonstrate the range of the new Steinway Concert Grand piano in PRAx. Prior to intermission, Diehl will play solo, classical piano. Slumberland VR Theatre: Experience “Slumberland,” a beautiful digital dream world at 2 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m,. April 22-May 11in Ray Theater at PRAx. Bombina Bombast, an award-winning performing arts company from Sweden, is a pioneer in the field of "live virtual reality." In this 45-minute, participatory VR experience, audience members wear a virtual reality headset, interacting with one another and with an actor (who is also in the physical theater) wearing a motion-capture suit. Registration open for Oregon Educators’ Summit: The College of Education, in partnership with the Oregon Department of Education, has announced that registration for the Equitable Accelerated Learning K-8 (ALK-8) statewide summit is now open to all Oregon public school educators. The summit will be held Aug. 6-7 on the Corvallis campus. The two-day event will feature ALK-8 working groups and professional learning for all Oregon educators. Participants will learn about innovative, field-initiated and piloted classroom-based resources and professional development materials reflecting the knowledge and expertise of Oregon literacy and mathematics leaders. Affordable Learning Grant: The Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until April 24. Faculty can receive up to $15,000 in funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource (OER) for your course. OER are openly licensed course materials that save students money and make higher education more accessible. 2024 OSU Beaver Store Grad Fair: Congratulations to the Class of 2024. Graduates will have the opportunity to pick up graduation essentials including regalia, frames, announcements and class rings at the OSU Beaver Store Grad Fair from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on April 16-17. Regalia and graduation essentials will also be available at beav.es/graduation on April 18.
DPO Teaching Award: To recognize excellence in Difference, Power, and Oppression (DPO) teaching, we invite nominations for the newly established DPO Teaching Award. Awardees will receive up to $1,000 as part of their recognition. Nominees must have taught at least one DPD/DPO course within the last two years and been instructors or faculty of record. 2024 Faculty Innovator Award: This award honors an outstanding Oregon State University inventor who has made a contribution leading to commercialization that significantly impacts their field and society. Nominations are being accepted through April 19. The awardee will receive a $5,000 prize and desktop award, and their department/unit will also receive $5,000.
NEW! Benton Place: As part of the Goss Baseball Hitting Building project, a section of the southbound lane on Benton Place will be closed intermittently on Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic through the area. The closure area will be located near the intersection at Washington Way. Six street parking spaces will be closed on the west side of Benton Place. In addition, the west sidewalk on Benton Place will be closed between Langton Place and Washington Way, starting near Snell Hall. Pedestrians may use the south sidewalk on Langton Place, the walkway on the west side of Goss Stadium and the north sidewalk on Washington Way to detour around the closure.
Orchard Ave: As part of the Withycombe Hall Renovation project, the south sidewalk on NW Orchard Avenue between NW 27th and NW 30th Street will be closed through April 10. Pedestrians may use the north sidewalk as a detour.
