Wright is currently a courtesy professor at Oregon State University’s College of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. She was on faculty as a tenured professor at OSU for 17 years until 2011. She joins us to talk about her expedition to Challenger Deep, which will be the focus of a lecture that she is scheduled to give on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the OSU campus in Corvallis.
Oregon State University is one of four institutions selected to advance a federal effort to modernize the National Spatial Reference System, which underpins surveying, mapping, autonomous vehicle navigation, precision agriculture and the rest of the United States’ geospatial economy.
Oregon State University has renamed the Military and Veteran Resource Center in honor of Oregon State former student Sergeant John N. Holcomb, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who died defending his platoon during the Vietnam War.
In the summer of 2022, Crook County Extension welcomed Shawna Holland to fill a vacant SNAP-Ed position. In just a few short months of community engagement, it became evident SNAP-Ed would play a crucial role in tackling food insecurity issues within Crook County.
The research that has been done — primarily on the East Coast — hasn’t been conclusive. In fact, according to a doctoral candidate in the Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences who is completing her dissertation on native plants, their cultivars and pollinators, the findings have been all over the map.

Thank a Vet: Every year, the Healthy Aging Club does a “Thank a Vet” project for the residents of the Oregon Veterans Home in Lebanon. Investigations of Gut Microbiome Modulation from Grains, Berries, and their Phytochemical Compounds: Frank Carbonera is a microbial ecologist from Washington State University with a specific interest in nutrition and gut microbiome. His research specifically focuses on the impact of consumption of non-digestible phytochemicals on the animal and human gut microbiome. Pedestrian experiment: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering is seeking participants for a study examining how people use intersections. Participants must be at least 18 years old, have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (glasses and contacts are OK) and feel comfortable walking approximately 1 mile total. Participation involves walking three adjacent intersections wearing eye tracking glasses and a time commitment of approximately one hour. Please contact Amy Wyman by email at wymana@oregonstate.edu.

Dungeness crab vessel equipment study: The public is invited to participate in a laboratory-based study conducted by Oregon State University titled “Improving Dungeness Crab Vessel Equipment," led by Jay Kim and Laurel Kinel. They are attempting to characterize physical risk factors associated with Dungeness crab harvesting tasks and evaluate the efficacy of ergonomic interventions in reducing the physical risk factors. Participants must be 21 or older, with no current pain or a history of musculoskeletal disorders. EXTENDED! Campus Way Closure, 26th Street to Memorial Place: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way will be closed between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place, Monday, Nov. 6 through Monday, Nov. 27 to allow for crane activity.
15th Street: As part of the Kerr South Parking Lot project, there will be intermittent delays on SW 15th Street due to construction activities on Thursday, Nov. 9 and Friday, Nov. 10. A single lane will be closed at a time, with traffic being allowed to pass through the opposite lane. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic. The impacted area will be between SW Washington Avenue and SW Adams Avenue near the Kerr Administration Building and Callahan Hall. Drivers should expect delays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on both days. Sidewalks will remain open in the area, but the crosswalk at SW Adams Avenue will be closed. Other possible impacts include noise near the work site.
Traffic diverted to temporary Van Buren bridge starting in mid-November: Commuters to campus may notice a traffic pattern change between downtown Corvallis and the east side of the Willamette River. Starting in mid-November, eastbound traffic will be diverted onto a temporary bridge on NW Van Buren Ave. The temporary bridge includes a separate path for pedestrians and bicyclists. The paths underneath the bridge will remain closed. A temporary signal at NW Van Buren Ave. and NW First Street will control traffic flow and NW First Street will change from two-way to one-way traffic for one block north and south of the Van Buren bridge. Kerr: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot closure has been extended until Dec. 4 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping. This includes the closure of the west sidewalk. ADA access is available on the east side of the building.
