For more perspective on the history of this type of violence in America, KXL’s Annette Newell asked O.S.U. History Professor, Dr. Chris Nichols, whether history shows that we’re seeing an increase. “Absolutely, we are seeing more and more of them, mass shootings in the U.S.,” said Nichols. “We’re seeing more worldwide. But we’re seeing way more in the U.S. The U.S. rates are just astonishing in world historical comparison.”
Oregon State University will mark the anniversary by hosting its inaugural State of Black Affairs Summit. The summit will feature speakers and panel discussions on topics including supporting Black mental health, DEI work in the current climate, and recruiting and retaining Black talent (OSU currently has fewer than 100 Black employees).
A multi-million dollar renovation project could be coming to Oregon State University for its mental health services. “I think OSU has started talking more in recent years about having a culture of care, both for staff and for students,” said Ian Kellems, Executive Director of OSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services.
More than 98% of U.S. waters outside the central Pacific Ocean are not part of a marine protected area, and the ones that are tend toward “lightly” or “minimally” protected from damaging human activity, research led by Oregon State University shows.
Data from the trials were also used by Oregon State University in a newly released study comparing the cost of ownership for battery-powered electric tractors to their diesel counterparts. Community Climate Survey: The 2022 Faculty and Staff Community Climate Survey launched on May 10 with an invitation from Interim Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Scott Vignos. Please check your email to access the survey link; the survey is open through June 3. The survey is administered every two years to gauge the opinions and perceptions of employees regarding their experience at OSU. It is one part of OSU’s broader efforts to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable university climate. To hear from as many people as possible, a $25 incentive will be provided to 50 randomly selected survey participants. Apply for a grant to make student learning more affordable: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant before the June 1 deadline. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, a closure is planned for the western portion of the sidewalk and driveway access south of Dixon Recreation Center and Goss Stadium along SW Washington Way (view map). A contractor will be onsite excavating a trench to install new conduit for future relocated power.
Utility tunnel: May 11-June 3. For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, an access hatch to the utility tunnel will be removed and relocated. The current hatch is located on Jefferson Avenue across from Kerr Administration Building. Additional access hatches can be found west, north and east of this location. Communication lines in the tunnel in this area are temporarily supported and impede movement. Staff should avoid this area of the tunnel, if possible.
Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, a planned sidewalk closure along the north side of SW Washington Way is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. Friday, May 6 through 5 p.m. Monday, June 13.
