Haunted Oregon: Ghostly stories from the Beaver State (KOIN)

Oregon State University in Corvallis is home to a number of ghost stories, including several related to infamous serial killer Ted Bundy, who abducted a student from the school in 1974. But one of the school’s halls is actually a subject of spiritual sightings, the unassuming building known as Waldo Hall.

Gray whales keep washing up dead: "We are in uncharted territory" (Newsweek)

A study from the Oregon State University's Marine Mammal Institute published in the journal Science investigated the reasons behind three mass die-offs involving the eastern North Pacific gray whale population since 1980. Scientists found that "dynamic and changing Arctic Ocean conditions" were at the root of all three. (see also Cosmos Magazine)
 

Corvallis' Jewish community hold space for one another amid Israel-Hamas war (Gazette-Times)

David S., a bioengineering student at Oregon State University, said in the first few days after the attacks he felt horrible and couldn’t leave his home. All of his family is in Israel, he said. 
 

How hop nerds are saving your favorite beer from climate change (New York Folk)

Lower yields and a drop in acid content could become a compounding threat, says Oregon State University hop chemist and brewing scientist Tom Shellhammer, who wasn’t involved in the new paper. If the hops are harvested with 30 percent less alpha acid content, “that means you need to use 30 percent or more of that hop,” says Shellhammer.

CTL QT Talks: Jaqueline Goldman, School of Psychological Science, will speak on “Academic Integrity and Equity: It’s in the Pedagogy..” Plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct have historically been conceptualized as the intentional and rational decision to cheat, however these assumptions neglect many underlying factors, both environmental and individual, that lead to students taking these shortcuts. Building from current literature, the session will provide pedagogical practices to support students' sense of community and connection and, in the process, explore how this may lead to fewer instances of academic misconduct. 11-11:50 a.m., Oct. 17, LINC 343. Registration.

Information Security Town Hall: Join for a free lunch and an opportunity for the OSU community to hear from the Office of Information Security and learn about common cyber security threats that affect Beaver Nation. JET Program Info Session: OSU students can apply to live and work in Japan after graduation through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. Teaching experience and Japanese language ability preferred but not required. The application for 2024 closes on Nov. 17. Pacific madrone tree workshop coming to Roseburg: Participants will learn about the west’s pacific madrone, the largest flowering tree of the family Ericaceae, at “All About Arbutus: A workshop covering pacific madrone from A to Z". The class will spend the morning at the OSU Extension office (1134 SE Douglas Ave., Roseburg, OR) and the afternoon looking at madrone trees in the field. 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Oct. 25. The cost for this class is $10 per person with the option to order a boxed lunch for an additional $15 (upon registering). Comment period open: An updated draft Forest Management Plan for the Elliott State Research Forest has been released and the public comment period is now open. Since early 2019, OSU and the Oregon Department of State Lands have been working collaboratively to explore transforming the Elliott State Forest into a publicly owned research forest. Review the draft plan and provide your comments; the public comment period is open until Oct. 27.

Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Campus Way: As part of the West Greenhouse Improvement project, sections of the north sidewalk along SW Campus Way will be closed Oct. 17-19. Phase 1 will impact the area between the Seed Laboratory and the West Greenhouses. Phase 2 will impact the area just west of the Seed Laboratory. Pedestrians approaching the area from the east or west may use the crosswalk located at the Seed Laboratory and the south sidewalk to detour around the work area. View map.

Washington Way: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, intersection work will occur along SW Washington Way at SW 17th, SW 26th and SW 30th streets from Oct. 16 through Oct. 20.    

Washington Way: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, Washington Way between 17th and 26th Streets will remain closed through Tuesday, Oct. 31. In addition to the road closure, the sidewalk on the north side of Washington Way between 17th and 26th Streets will be closed. Pedestrians may use the multi-use path on the south side of Washington Way as a detour.

Traffic change on SW 26th St. to improve safety: Southwest 26th St. stretching from SW Jefferson Way north to NW Orchard Avenue has been changed from two-way vehicle traffic to one-way, northbound traffic only. The street has been updated with new signage, designated north and south bicycle lanes and other street markings designed to clarify and enhance the pedestrian and bicyclist priority zone. This change supports a more safe and comfortable campus that prioritizes pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users and minimizes conflicts between vehicles and people, especially during class change times and implements a key recommendation in OSU’s Transportation Plan and the city’s Transportation System Plan.
