OSU leads effort to expand ocean oxygen monitoring sensor use in fishing industry (KTVZ)

Oregon State University researchers are leading an effort to refine the design and expand use of oxygen monitoring sensors that can be deployed in fishing pots to relay critical information on changing ocean conditions to the fishing industry.

2021 study from Oregon State University researchers concluded that sheep ranches were an ideal fit for agrivoltaic developments, as “the results … indicated that lower herbage mass available in solar pastures was offset by higher forage quality, resulting in similar spring lamb production to open pastures.”

“We don’t know a lot about ringtails,” said Sean Matthews, a wildlife ecologist with Oregon State University’s Institute for Natural Resources. “We get a lot of traditional ecological knowledge from tribes that we work with, which is a huge source of information, and Western science is slowly catching up to that knowledge.”

Wind Ensemble: My Hands Are a City: The Oregon State University Wind Ensemble presents My Hands Are a City, featuring music by Ivan Trevino, Catherine Likhuta, and Jonathan Newman's Symphony No. 1: My Hands Are A City; with poetry and photographs inspired by the music and created by OSU students and special guests, the Westview High School Wind Ensemble, Bobby Rathbone, conductor. PRAx tickets on sale now: There’s something for everyone in the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts (PRAx) inaugural season. The spring 2024 lineup includes a wide variety of musicians, interactive performances, virtual reality installations and visual artists. Visitors can create their own event series to bundle tickets and save money. Check out PRAx’s website to learn more and purchase tickets. Most events offer $5 student tickets.

Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology (EECB) Seminar: Michelle Nijhuis, author of “Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction,” will give a talk entitled “How to Talk About Conservation So People Will Listen.” Nijhuis is a longtime contributing editor of High Country News and has reported on science and the environment for National Geographic, the Atlantic and the New York Times Magazine. 4-5 p.m., March 6 in LINC 302 or Zoom: beav.es/eecb.

Retired SCARC director Larry Landis, “co-instigator” of the LCLP and the project’s historical consultant, will share Letitia’s story and discuss the broad range of work of the LCLP since its establishment in 2020.

Core Curriculum for OSU Managers and Supervisors: Managers and supervisors at OSU play a key role in enabling employees to do their best work. The Core Curriculum for Managers and Supervisors is a training program for all Oregon State University managers, supervisors and lead workers. At the end of this course, learners will: have a solid understanding about the principles and policies that apply to our employees; know how to navigate within the space of talent management activities; recognize when, and how, to provide equal opportunity and access to employees and more. NW CASC Research Fellowship Program: The NW CASC is currently accepting proposals for our 2024-2025 Research Fellowship Program.
