Pandemic reaches 'watershed' moment, with end of mask mandate (Oregon Capital Chronicle)

For some people, the policy change may mean a return to business as usual, while others may want to continue masking up, public health officials said Friday. “There are people who may still need to be protected,” said Chunhuei Chi, professor of the Global Health Program at Oregon State University.  They include the elderly, immuno-compromised and people who cannot get vaccinated, Chi said.

Families pull Black children from Bend schools amid racial slurs, harassment (Bend Bulletin)

“It was attributed to Black people during slavery,” Erika McCalpine, Oregon State University’s faculty senate president and director of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lab at OSU-Cascades in Bend, said of the racial slur. “It was meant to be an insult. It was meant to cause harm. To say it now, it has the same meaning as it did hundreds of years ago as it was used on slaves.”

"Modern medicine is secular," said Gary Ferngren, a professor emeritus of history at Oregon State University who studies the history of medicine and religion. "Since the late 19th century, it has developed very rapidly in cutting itself off from any religious or spiritual values." For much of human history, societies used religious frameworks to understand the meaning of disease and pain, Ferngren has written. Illness could be attributed to causes such as a magical curse or divine punishment.

Ruggiero is the director of The Cascadia Coastlines and Peoples Hazards Research Hub (Cascadia CoPes Hub) and professor in Oregon State University's College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences.

Beyond Benefits: Supporting Others Through End of Life. This session will take a holistic look at end-of-life issues, including navigating care needs (including hospice and palliative care), what to expect during the dying process and how to cope with the emotions that arise. We’ll also look at myths surrounding death and dying and how to support your loved one physically and emotionally. COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to test at one of these locations: Corvallis: Student Experience Center and Cascade Hall 120: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.. During Spring Break, testing takes place Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Cascades Hall 120. Spring term testing moves to outside Plageman Hall Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Cascade  Hall 120, Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Bend: Outside Obsidian Hall Monday-Wednesday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Closed Spring Break.

NCORE 2022 Scholarship and Activities: The National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) will be held in Portland, May 31-June 4. The Office of Institutional Diversity is sponsoring various efforts for this conference, including an employee conference registration scholarship, group registration discount, a conference reception for OSU employees and friends, and information about OSU-led workshops. Students wanted to travel to DC: Join fellow Beavs in an ASOSU sponsored trip to Washington D.C. to meet with federal lawmakers and lobby for the needs of OSU students. This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience, network with federal lawmakers as well as D.C.-based OSU alumni, and represent the ASOSU as an ambassador of the student population. Art-Sci Fellowship faculty mentors: We are looking for scientists, artists, writers and musicians who are willing to serve as faculty mentors for this year-long student experience. Booster clinic: The Beaver Booster Clinic takes place in the SEC Plaza through March 18. All COVID-19 vaccines available, including doses for children. No insurance, ID or appointment required but bring your CDC vaccine card if you have one.

Traffic and Maintenance 

Monroe Avenue and 16th Street parking lot: As part of the Graf Hall Renovation, the Monroe Avenue and 16th Street parking lot (lot #3221) will be closed for paving and ground floor entries to the building will be inaccessible starting March 10. 

Power outages for multiple buildings March 22: For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, a series of planned power outages are scheduled. The planned power outages will impact multiple buildings located along or near SW Jefferson Way in the Community Hall Slope Project work area. Planned outages are scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Buildings include: Callahan Hall, Cauthorn Hall, Hawley Hall, Heckart Lodge, Kerr Administration Building, McAlexander Field House, McNary Dining Hall, McNary Hall, Poling Hall, Reed Lodge, Snell Hall, Weatherford Hall and Wilson Hall.

Graf parking lot: As part of the Graf Hall Renovation, the Monroe Avenue and 16th Street parking lot (lot #3221) will be closed for paving and ground floor entries to the building will be inaccessible. Excavation and forming for the concrete work will start on March 7 and will continue through the paving of the lot starting March 14. The lot and ground floor entries will not be closed during this work (March 7-11) but use caution and watch for workers and equipment in the parking lot during this time.
