Sewage sampling played a key role in helping researchers detect the presence of the highly contagious U.K. COVID-19 variant in Central Oregon. Scientists with Oregon State University’s Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing said Friday they had been collecting wastewater samples as part of a partnership between Oregon Health Authority and the university’s TRACE project. Courtney Campbell, a professor who has taught medical ethics at Oregon State University for the past 30 years, said risk of infection is so much higher in prisons that the argument for moving inmates ahead in the vaccine queue is a compelling one.
"In our latest rounds of sequencing from late December and early January, we detected the genetic fingerprint of the UK variant in a sample of wastewater from Bend, Oregon that was collected on December 22nd," said Dr. Brett Tyler, Director of Oregon State University's Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing.

As the harvesters, processors, retailers and aquaculture practitioners took stock of their situations, a trio of Oregon Sea Grant Extension faculty — Amanda Gladics in Astoria, Angee Doerr in Newport and Jamie Doyle in Coos Bay — went to work. They designed an electronic survey that was in the field from April 22 to June 1. They received 131 completed surveys, primarily from seafood-based businesses and individuals on the Oregon Coast.
The museum enlisted the support of Dr. Tom Shellhammer and Jeff Clawson from the Fermentation Sciences Department at Oregon State University to recreate a pilot batch of the beer using precise historic ingredients and chemically acceptable modern substitutes. OSU has one of the premier fermentation sciences programs in the United States, with graduates holding a variety of positions in major breweries and wineries in the U.S. and abroad.

Nanoplastics Video – Pacific Northwest Consortium and the Marine Studies Initiative: The Marine Studies Initiative and Pacific Northwest Consortium on Plastics teamed up with Oregon State Productions to create a video on nanoplastics and tire wear particles. Nanoplastics are particles smaller than macro and microplastics. While scientists have detected micro tire wear particles in the environment, further research is needed to improve our knowledge about the presence and behavior of nanoparticles and their impact on aquatic species. Animal Interlude of Common Murre: Spring Creek Project's just-launched Animal Interludes series will consist of 20 tiny concerts (two per week), each an original composition of words and music in honor of a threatened or beloved animal. They are part of the series Music to Save Earth's Songs, inspired by Kathleen Dean Moore's new book Earth's Wild Music. In the first Interlude video, Robin Kimmerer reads a passage about the Common Murre, accompanied by Erika Nagamoto on violin and Titus Young on cello.
