UPDATED! A Conversation with Alexander Lloyd Blake: Alexander Lloyd Blake, founder and artistic director of Tonality Choir, will appear at 6 p.m. on April 12 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Tonality is an award-winning choral ensemble focused on spreading a message of unity, peace and social justice. During this event, Blake will join historian and ethnomusicologist Kelly Bosworth on stage for a conversation about using music as a conduit for environmental awareness and change and social change more broadly. Bosworth is assistant professor of public history & popular music at Oregon State University. Free. More info here.

Beaver BarCamp 2024: This is an informal un-conference that has been hosted by the OSU Open Source Lab since 2006. We are excited to bring this live in-person event where attendees can participate in sessions throughout the day or propose their own talk on a project, hobby or research interest. Hatfield Marine Science Day: Hatfield Marine Science Day is an annual science fair and open house featuring the marine science programs and research at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. You can talk with researchers about their marine science exhibits, get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Hatfield campus, enjoy a show on the sounds of the sea, and learn about the latest advances in whale research from keynote speakers KC Bierlich and Clara Bird from the GEMM Lab's GRANITE Project. Taiwanese film screening: The Taiwan Student Association and the Chiu Program for Taiwan Studies will host a film screening of "BIG," the newest film by the Taiwanese director Wei Te-sheng, at 1 p.m., April 13 in LINC 128. Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Tonality: Tickets on sale now for “You Are Not Alone,” directed by Alexander Lloyd Blake at 7 p.m., April 13 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Tonality creates gorgeous concerts focusing on issues rarely present in choral music. At PRAx, Tonality takes on the topic of mental health awareness. A pre-concert program puts the spotlight on community and OSU mental health providers. This evening is dedicated to them. NEW! Water is Power: The Gila River Project. Join artist Joel Slayton and scientist Lisa Johanson as they share their work on the Gila River Project, which investigates one of America’s most expansive ecosystems. They will share details about their mobile laboratory/studio and location-based research, which explores the complex connections between natural and artificial challenges to the river and the environmental and human adaptations shaping its future. 4 p.m. April 16 at Detrick Hall in PRAx.

Film Screening of The Wonder and the Worry: Tickets on sale now for a sneak preview of “The Wonder and the Worry,” at 7 p.m., April 17-18 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. This documentary film traces the fragmentation and upheaval in photojournalism and its impact on the world’s most iconic publication: National Geographic magazine. The film delves into digital disruption and the power of environmental storytelling as it follows the intertwined careers of Chris Johns, OSU alumnus and former National Geographic editor, and his daughter Louise, a working freelance photographer. Imagining a World Without Sexual Violence: In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness & Action Month, join the Center for Advocacy, Prevention & Education (CAPE) Peer Education team 11 a.m.-3 p.m., April 18 in the SEC first floor lobby to write, draw, collage or otherwise envision a world without sexual violence. Participants may volunteer their submissions to be compiled into a campus art display and digital zine.
Pianist Aaron Diehl + The Aaron Diehl Trio: Tickets are on sale now to see virtuoso pianist Aaron Diehl and his ensemble perform at 7 p.m., April 20 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. The concert will demonstrate the range of the new Steinway Concert Grand piano in PRAx. Prior to intermission, Diehl will play solo, classical piano. After intermission, Diehl will play in a jazz-informed mode with his trio. Tickets $25-50; students $5.
Slumberland VR Theatre: Experience “Slumberland,” a beautiful digital dream world at 2 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m,. April 22-May 11in Ray Theater at PRAx. Bombina Bombast, an award-winning performing arts company from Sweden, is a pioneer in the field of "live virtual reality." In this 45-minute, participatory VR experience, audience members wear a virtual reality headset, interacting with one another and with an actor (who is also in the physical theater) wearing a motion-capture suit. "Slumberland" is based on the company's interviews with hundreds of youth about their experiences of sleep in the digital age. Tickets $20; students $5. Tickets here.

PRAx Presents Las Cafeteras: Enjoy the electric sound and energy of Las Cafeteras at 7 p.m. April 28 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish and Spanglish and add a remix of sounds. Four-time Grammy winners Eighth Blackbird: PRAx Presents Eighth Blackbird and the OSU Wind Ensemble 7 p.m. on May 2 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Eighth Blackbird sextet has been hailed as “one of the smartest, most dynamic ensembles on the planet” by the Chicago Tribune. PRAx and the Office of the Provost Present Okaidja Afroso: Experience Okaidja Afroso at 7 p.m., May 4. in Detrick Hall at PRAx. In “Jaku Mumor,” multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and dancer Okaidja Afroso collaborates with Indigenous Ga-Dangme fishermen to share their a cappella singing and chants in his music and via film. Dominant Design and Disruptive Production Innovation Seminar: Frank Koppenhagen, visiting professor in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering (MIME), will give an overview of his responsibilities and activities at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. 2024 CEOAS Earth Day Lecture: Bold Solutions, Better Planet. OMN students chosen for prestigious internship: A record seven Orange Media Network students have been chosen to work at news organizations this summer as part of the Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism. The program, sponsored by the University of Oregon, is a highly prestigious internship pairing students with community news organizations across Oregon for 10 weeks of paid experience. OMN will be represented by two editors in chief: Katie Livermore, editor of The Daily Barometer, who will be reporting for The Bend Bulletin, and Emma Coke, editor of the Beaver’s Digest lifestyle magazine, who will be reporting for an online news organization in Ashland. Joining them as Snowden interns are James Kelley, Baro city editor, working at Jefferson Public Radio; Audrey Saiz, Baro sports editor; working at The Daily Astorian; Alexander Banks, Baro assistant editor, working at the Baker City Herald; Hannah Lull, Baro copy editor, working at The Redmond Spokesman, and Cailan Menius-Rash, Baro reporter, working at KLCC.
