CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University has appointed Vincent Remcho as the interim dean of its College of Science.

Remcho, a professor of chemistry and associate dean of the college, has been on the OSU faculty since 1998. He succeeds Sherman Bloomer, who is the new director of Budget and Fiscal Planning for the university.

The College of Science is home to some of OSU's most recognized disciplines, including nationally noted programs in physics, ecosystem informatics, water resources, environmental health science and more. It is a major reason that OSU gained the top ranking in the United States for conservation biology recently, and two other departments have been ranked in the top 10 by the Chronicle of Higher Education - zoology and science education.

Remcho, who has adjunct appointments in OSU's Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and the School of Mechanical, Industrial, & Manufacturing Engineering, specializes in the design and fabrication of microfluidic analytical instruments, which he and his colleagues apply to biochemical, environmental and nanomanufacturing problems.

He is co-founder of two Corvallis-based research companies - Trillium FiberFuels Inc., a cellulosic ethanol startup company, and GeneSpace Inc., a microtechnology company focused on total gene synthesis.

Remcho has been recognized for his teaching and research by several associations, and has received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. He is affiliated with the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI).

Sabah Randhawa, OSU provost and executive vice president, said the university will launch a national search for a full-time dean immediately.
