CORVALLIS, Ore. -The Oregon State University Socratic Club will sponsor a lecture on Monday, April 11, exploring the topic, "What if Christianity is True? Lessons from Mother Teresa."

The speaker for this free public event is Mary Poplin. It begins at 7 p.m. in the Austin Auditorium of LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus.

In 1996 Poplin, a professor of education at Claremont Graduate University, spent her sabbatical as a volunteer working in Calcutta with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity. Poplin wanted to understand why Mother Teresa said their ministry was "religious work and not social work."

Poplin's experience radically shaped her newly discovered Christian faith and transformed her perspective of the world and her place in it.  She described that experience in her book, "Finding Calcutta:  What Mother Teresa Taught Me about Meaningful Work and Service."

Poplin will also host an hour-long roundtable discussion at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, in the Journey Room of the Memorial Union. In the event, she will expand on her Socratic Club lecture and entertain questions from the audience.
