NEWPORT, Ore. - The public is invited to learn about topics as diverse as composting toilets, urban poultry, insects, plant disease and native trees in more than 40 classes at the first annual Natural Resources School sponsored by Oregon State University Extension.

The one-day event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Oregon Coast Community College in South Beach. Cost is $50, which includes lunch and refreshments. Registration is required by Oct. 15, and walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

"The classes are in forestry management, agriculture, small farms, special forest products, Christmas trees, sawing and drying wood," said Sam Angima, chairman of the OSU Extension office for Lincoln County. "There are also sessions on wildlife, landscapes, gardens, pests and invasive species, fisheries, fishery products, and general information for those who love nature, gardening and the environment - something for everyone and for the whole family, as well."

Ten classes will run concurrently, and persons can attend up to four sessions. Transportation will be by van to most of the field sites.

The natural resources school is sponsored by the OSU Extension offices in both Lincoln and Benton counties, in cooperation with the Oregon Coast Community College.
