CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's Bone Research Laboratory is seeking female participants ages 8-12 and ages 75-90 from the Willamette Valley for two new studies.
The first study at the Bone Research Laboratory involves girls ages eight to 12 years. Children in this age range who do not participate in organized physical activity more than one day per week (i.e. dance, cheer, soccer, or other team sports) are needed for a control group for a study examining the skeletal effects of a program called, "Girls on the Run." Participants will receive a $25 gift voucher to OSU's Kidspirit in addition to valuable information about their bone heath, physical activity and nutrition.
To participate in this study, parents should contact Stasi Kasianchuk, 603-733-6631 or Staci Kasianchuk
Adrienne McNamara, a doctoral student in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, is seeking postmenopausal women ages 75 to 90 who are not physically active to serve as a control group for a study on the effects of "Better Bones & Balance," a community exercise program. Participants must not participate in more than 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week (walking and stretching are fine) and should not be doing any resistance training. Women who are on hormone replacement therapy or medications for osteoporosis are not eligible.
In exchange for participating in this three-hour study, participants will receive a free bone density scan (usually valued at $200-$400). Other tests include body composition, strength and balance tests, and questionnaires assessing nutritional status, health history and physical activity behaviors. Interested potential participants should contact Adrienne McNamara at 541-990-7820 or e-mail Adrienne McNamara
