CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Agricultural Research Foundation, a nonprofit corporation and corporate affiliate of Oregon State University, has awarded grants to initiate 35 OSU projects, ranging from a study to generate electricity from wastewater to an investigation of the cancer-fighting properties of hops.

The grants, most in the $10,000 range, total $337,844. For more than 20 years, the foundation has awarded grants to launch new research that will help generate economic returns to Oregon's diverse agricultural industry. This "seed funding" not only addresses state-wide agricultural issues, but has successfully attracted additional funding from other sources, according to Dorothy Beaton, the Agricultural Research Foundation's executive director.

Additional project ideas receiving funding include chemically "fingerprinting" the origin of foods, adding value to Oregon's berry and cherry products and protecting streams from orchard spray drift.
