CORVALLIS, Ore. - James E. Johnson, a silviculturist specializing in ecological restoration, will join the College of Forestry at Oregon State University as associate dean for extended education and Extension forestry program leader.

He will succeed Scott Reed, who is now dean of Extension at OSU.

Johnson is the associate dean for outreach at Virginia Polytechnic Institute's College of Natural Resources. His research includes a long-term investigation of the impacts of gypsy moth defoliation on tree growth and mortality in mixed forests, and the ecological restoration of riparian flat rock plant communities.

Johnson has won numerous national awards for communications and brings extensive knowledge of national Extension efforts and a strong record of establishing innovative outreach education programs, according to Roger Admiral, director of operations at the College of Forestry.

The College of Forestry's Extension program is part of the statewide public service mission of OSU, which includes the Forest Research Laboratory, Agriculture Experiment Station and Extension. Johnson will oversee county agents and campus specialists who deliver the knowledge gained by campus and other scientists to landowners, forestry practitioners, industry management and employees, conservation groups and the general public of Oregon. Johnson will join OSU in September.
