CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon has declared 2006 as the "Year of Study Abroad" as Oregon State University's International Programs is increasing the number of university study abroad opportunities each year.

The formal proclamation by Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury follows a U.S. Senate resolution recognizing the role that study abroad plays in shaping U.S. education and global leadership.

Eighty-eight formal study abroad programs are offered to students at Oregon State, with about 435 students involved in foreign study this year, said Joseph Hoff, OSU coordinator for International Education. About 90 students have studied abroad or conducted research abroad in OSU's International Degree program, a dual degree program that requires students to study a second language and write a thesis related to their foreign studies.

Program offerings at OSU will increase by fall 2006, Hoff said, with added opportunities such as field studies with the Vermont-based School for International Training and the Council on International Exchange in Portland, Maine.

The Oregon proclamation recognizes the role that study abroad programs play in cultural awareness, language proficiency and the broader perspective that results from international experiences.

The governor also noted that becoming aware and involved with study abroad programs and activities will result in "the betterment of our educational system, our economic development and the general welfare of our population."

International Programs at OSU is composed of five units that work to provide programs and services to enable students to acquire skills relevant to borderless careers and encourages students to develop an enriched awareness of themselves and their global environment, Hoff said.

The office also works directly with international and domestic faculty on the international dimensions of teaching, research, and extended education.
