CORVALLIS, Ore. - Two Oregon State University students have received prestigious Fulbright international scholar awards to continue their education and pursue research overseas.

Alison C. Hyde, who recently earned degrees from OSU in environmental science and German, will travel to Germany to study new clean energy technologies at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.

Hyde, who also has an international degree from OSU, previously had studied in Freiburg, Germany, through an Oregon University System exchange program with Baden-Wurttemberg. As part of her international degree, she completed a thesis and conducted research comparing alternative fuels in Europe, the United States and Japan.

She hopes to pursue graduate studies and perhaps law school upon returning to the U.S.

Shannon B. Wanless, a doctoral student at OSU in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, will conduct her dissertation research at Fu Jen University in Taiwan, where she will facilitate a project on learning-related skills with pre-school children.

As part of her research, Wanless hopes to clarify the relationship between learning skills and academic achievement among Taiwanese children, and study the influence of teaching and environmental influences on those skills. She has a bachelor's degree in sociology and anthropology from Denison University, and a master's degree in early childhood education from the University of Michigan.

Wanless hopes to continue her research on early learning in children in other international settings.

Fulbright grants provide funding for round-trip travel, full or partial tuition, insurance and some other expenses.
