CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a two-week celebration including more than 20 events and activities from Jan. 8-19.
Activities are open to the public and most are free. OSU will cancel classes on Monday, Jan. 15, to allow students, faculty and staff to join the 19th annual Peace Breakfast, which starts at 7:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Tickets, available at the door, are $7.95, or $5.95 for students.
Salem activist and educator, Johnny Lake, will be the featured speaker at the breakfast. He has served as research chairman of the State of Oregon Commission for Black Affairs and as a counselor dealing with drug, alcohol, and gang-affected youth and adults. He has also conducted multicultural sensitivity training for a number of organizations.
Former Portland Urban League president Darryl S. Tukufu is the featured speaker at 7 p.m. on Jan. 8 in LaSells Stewart Center. Tukufu directs an Ohio-based human resources consulting business and has been a university professor and administrator. He tours nationally speaking on cultural issues.
Also scheduled on Jan. 15 is a candlelight walk and vigil. The walk will start at 6 p.m. at the OSU Black Cultural Center at 25th Street and Monroe Avenue with the procession ending in a vigil at the Memorial Union north steps. Participants should bring their own candles. Following the vigil will be a discussion in the MU Learning Lounge.

All Day: "Sign the Pledge," supporters are asked to sign their names on the bulletin board in the Memorial Union Concourse and affirm support for nonviolent social change, equality, justice, freedom and peace. The display runs from Jan. 8-19.
12:30 p.m.: "Awakenings," a 90-minute screening, with discussion, of the first part of a six-part video series, "Eyes on the Prize," which recounts the history of the civil rights struggle in the United States. MU Room 105. An encore presentation is set for 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 17.
7 p.m.: Darryl Tukufu is the featured speaker in the City of Corvallis Martin Luther King Jr. Commission Program. LaSells Stewart Center.
12:30 p.m.: "Fighting Back," a 90-minute screening, with discussion, of the second part of a six-part video series, "Eyes on the Prize," which recounts the history of the civil rights struggle in the United States. MU Room 105. An encore presentation is set for 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 18.
12:30 p.m.: "Ain't Scared of Your Jails," a 90-minute screening, with discussion, of the third part of a six-part video series, "Eyes on the Prize," which recounts the history of the U.S. civil rights struggle. MU Room 105. An encore presentation is set for 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 19.
7 p.m.: "Where's My 40 Acres and Other Broken Promises," a three-hour panel presentation and open forum, MU Room 105.
12:30 p.m. "No Easy Walk," a 90-minute screening, with discussion, of the fourth part of a six-part video series, "Eyes on the Prize," detailing U.S. civil rights struggles. MU Room 105.
12:30 p.m.: "Mississippi: Is This America?" a 90-minute screening, with discussion, of the fifth part of a six-part video series, "Eyes on the Prize," which recounts the history of the civil rights struggle in the United States. MU Room 105.
4 p.m.: "Teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," a one-hour credit course from OSU's Ethnic Studies department. For information, Ethnic Studies, 541-737-0709. Strand Agricultural Hall, Room 222.
9 a.m.: Fifth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Fun Run, Walk and Roll. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. at Langton Hall.
All Day: An exhibition of art work by African American artists. MU Concourse, exhibit continues through March 5.
7:30 a.m.: 19th Annual OSU Peace Breakfast, featuring a talk by Salem activist Johnny Lake. MU Ballroom. Tickets $7.95, $5.95 for students.
2 p.m.: Three-hour "Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Party," in the OSU Black Cultural Center, 25th Street and Monroe Avenue.
6 p.m.: Candlelight Walk and Vigil. Meet at the Black Cultural Center and walk to the MU north steps. A discussion will follow the vigil in the MU Learning Lounge. Walkers should bring their own candles.
11:45 a.m.: "Fight for Freedom," a 30-minute presentation by OSU President Paul Risser, Laverne Woods of the OSU Educational Opportunities Program, and OSU student-athlete Ken Simonton. MU north steps.
12:30 p.m.: "Bridge to Freedom" a 90-minute screening, with discussion, of the final part of a six-part video series, "Eyes on the Prize," detailing U.S. civil rights struggles. MU Room 105.
7 p.m.: "An Evening of Song and Poetry," participants are encouraged to present poetry or songs that follow King's vision in a two-hour session in MU Room 208.
10 p.m.: A four-hour, all-university dance, free for OSU students. McAlexander Field House.
