CORVALLIS, Ore.- The Oregon State University Alumni Association has named a journalist and longtime editor of The Register-Guard newspaper in Eugene as the association's new manager of alumni communications.

As a central part of his new position, Kevin Miller, who was senior editor of The Register-Guard for the past three years, will serve as editor of Oregon Stater, OSU's 90-year-old alumni magazine. Under the leadership of recently retired editor George Edmonston Jr., the publication has earned numerous awards, including 15 national and regional prizes since 1988 from the Washington-based Council for the Advancement of Education.

"As the Alumni Association for Oregon's premier research university, we're delighted to have attracted a professional of Kevin's quality and experience," said Alumni Association Executive Director Jeff Todd. "This is a great fit. Kevin is well prepared to have a major impact on our efforts to connect in new and deeper ways with the thousands of alumni who call Oregon State alma mater."

Miller, 50, is a 1978 graduate of OSU, where he earned a bachelor's degree in technical journalism and served as editor of The Daily Barometer (1977-78), the university's campus newspaper.

He joined The Register-Guard in 1982 as a reporter, and was named city editor the following year. He served in various capacities at the paper in ensuing years, including electronic information editor and feature writer, before being named senior editor three years ago.

Throughout his 28-year career, Miller has won multiple awards from such organizations as Sigma Delta Chi (the society of professional journalists) and the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

"After 30 years of working in daily newspaper journalism, I'm excited and quite lucky to have this opportunity," Miller said.

Miller lives in Eugene with his wife, Lynn Songer, and two daughters - Erin, 16, and Maddy, 14. His grown stepdaughter, Katie Willson, is also an OSU graduate and a reporter at the McMinville News-Register.
