BEND - Beginning this fall, Oregon State University's "OSU Central Oregon" will offer professional development courses for business people throughout this region, including two certificate programs designed to teach managers and supervisors the finer points of leadership and management.

The "supervisory leadership" curriculum will be offered both in Prineville, at the Stafford Inn; and in Bend, at the new OSU Central Oregon office on Empire Avenue. The "organizational leadership" program will be offered in Bend. Both will be held one afternoon a week, running from September, 1999, through February, 2000.

The programs are divided into five sequential, four-week, 16-hour courses, which may be taken independently or applied toward the granting of a professional certificate from OSU.

Participants will gain a broad view of management with direct work applications. All classes will be taught by professionals with organizational management experience, and the two programs include such courses as leadership and team building; human resource management, thinking like an entrepreneur; quality management and continuous improvement; and focusing organizational efforts.

These management programs are the direct response to needs outlined in an assessment study conducted last fall among central Oregon companies that employ more than 10,000 people.

Beaver Motor Coaches in Bend is one of many organizations committing their resources and employees to the OSU programs.

"Our goal for this program is to offer our supervisory and managerial employees without degrees a bonafide educational opportunity," said Tesa Patton, human resource director for the company. "This program will benefit our company by giving our people advanced knowledge."

Tuition for the courses range from $240 to $320 per course. Discounts are given to companies enrolling three or more employees.

These programs are just one example of the offerings from OSU Central Oregon, which recently opened its new office on north Highway 97 and Empire. The university also offers four degree programs through Distance and Continuing Education, multiple programs through the Extension Offices and alumni events throughout the year. Registration deadline for the certificate programs is Sept. 1. For more information on these or other offerings from OSU Central Oregon, call 541-312-8361.
