CORVALLIS - Mary Jo Nye, Horning Professor of Humanities at Oregon State University, has been chosen to receive the Dexter Award from the American Chemical Society.

She will receive the award, and present an invited lecture, at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society next March (2000) in San Francisco.

The Dexter Award for Outstanding Achievement in the History of Chemistry honors lifetime achievement. It is supported by the Dexter Chemical Company.

Nye specializes in the intellectual and society history of the physical sciences. Recently, she has focused much of her work on the history of scientists who have taken political stands, and the impact those scientists have had on a variety of controversial issues, including nuclear weapons.

She was a driving force behind the creation of OSU's Horning Lecture Series, developed four years ago to help bridge the gap between science and the humanities.

A faculty member in the OSU history department since 1994, Nye and her husband, Robert Nye, both hold endowed professorships. They came to Oregon State from the University of Oklahoma.
