CORVALLIS - Students at Oregon State University are hoping to kiss their way into the Guinness Book of Records at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, in the campus Memorial Union Quad.

Everyone - not just students - is welcome to participate in Kiss Off '97 as OSU attempts to break the standing world's record of 1,420 couples all kissing at the same time.

"We hope to have at least 3,000 people, that's 1,500 couples, show up," and kiss their way into the record book, said Machelle Kennedy, OSU Memorial Union programs coordinator. The length of the kiss is up to the couple, Kennedy said.

"We need everyone who can make it here to show up - the more people the better," Kennedy said. Couples, families and friends are encouraged to participate, she added.

The event is being held in conjunction with Rock n' Rage, an annual free spring festival staged by OSU's student-run Memorial Union Program Council. In addition to the world's record attempt, there will live music performed by Liquid Groove, Dizzy Fish and Cigar, dancing, food and live radio broadcasts.

The current record was set on Valentine's Day 1996 at the University of Maine at Orono, according to the Guinness Book of Records
