CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University safety officer and two campus service units have earned the university's 1998 Recycling Excellence Awards.

Nancy Rohn, an OSU public safety officer, was named Individual Recycler of the Year by Campus Recycling for her efforts in setting an example of good recycling habits for her fellow employees, said Bruce Foster, operations supervisor for OSU Property Management.

Rohn's persistence also has nudged her fellow employees into the recycling habit, Foster said.

University Housing and Dining Services earned honors as Department Recycler of the Year. Housing and dining provides extensive recycling and waste reduction services to OSU residence halls and coordinates end-of-term recycling drives. About 350 tons of waste is diverted from the landfill each year by University Housing and Dining Services, Foster said.

In addition, Housing and Dining Services coordinates annual food and clothing drives with regional relief agencies.

Landscape Management earned the 1998 Waste Reduction and Prevention Award, Foster said. Besides handling a normal volume of more than 750 tons of campus grass, leaves and tree trimmings, Landscape Management also added 4,800 cubic yards of brush and clean dimensional lumber to the mix for use as mulch and ground cover. Landscape Management also re-uses rock and gravel from campus construction projects for service road maintenance.

About 43 percent of the 10 tons of waste generated each day on the OSU campus is recycled.
