CORVALLIS - Michael Kassner, a professor of mechanical engineering at Oregon State University, has been named a fellow of the American Society for Metals.

Fellowship in this professional organization recognizes distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering. Kassner, who is the Northwest Aluminum Professor of Mechanical Engineering, was cited particularly for his work in developing aluminum, zirconium and titanium alloys, in collaboration with both federal research agencies and private industry through the Oregon Metals Initiative.

Kassner received his doctorate from Stanford University in 1981 and has been at OSU since 1990, coming to the university from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, six of the present or recent emeritus faculty are fellows of professional societies.
