CORVALLIS - The Beavers and the Ducks are calling a short truce the morning of the Civil War football game on Nov. 21 as fraternity members from both universities run the game ball from Eugene to Corvallis.
"It's the sixth annual 'Civil War Game Ball Run,' a 50-mile continuous relay," said Scott Peterson, philanthropy chair of the Oregon State University chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity. The run will benefit the American Cancer Society, with Sigma Kappa runners from OSU and the University of Oregon seeking sponsors and pledges.
Runners from Eugene's Kappa Sigma plan to start their journey from the chapter house at 1090 Alder St. about 7 a.m. on Nov. 21, Peterson said. To sponsor runners or pledge funds to the Cancer Society effort, contact Peterson at 541-754-2396
"They run to Junction City down Highway 99, then the Kappa Sigmas from OSU meet them at Junction City and run the ball the rest of the way to Parker Stadium."
On-hand to carry the ball onto the Parker Stadium football field will be Rich Koeper, a 1964 OSU All-American offensive tackle who later played for the Green Bay Packers.
Fraternity members expect to raise $12,000 for the American Cancer Society, Peterson said.
"With cancer being such a common disease, it feels good to donate money to the American Cancer Society and hopefully help people who are suffering from this disease. I hope to get as many people as possible in joining the fight against cancer," Peterson said.
