CORVALLIS - A candlelight vigil, films and the annual Peace Breakfast are some of the highlights of the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2004 that begin this week and continue through Jan. 23 at Oregon State University.
Activities are open to the public and most are free. The university will cancel classes on Jan. 19 to allow students and staff to join the tribute.
The 22nd annual Peace Breakfast - "Building the Dream: Reaching Each Other, Teaching Each Other" - starts at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, in the campus Memorial Union Ballroom. Tickets for the 90-minute event will be available at the door and are $10 general admission, $6 for students and children under 5 are free.
Minty Jeffrey, co-founder and co-owner of "Colors NW" magazine is the featured speaker.
At 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19, a candlelight vigil is scheduled on the MU north steps. Participants are asked to bring their own candles and meet at 6 p.m. at the Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center, 2325 N.W. Monroe St., for a candlelight walk to MU steps.

10 a.m.: "Sign the Pledge," community members are asked to sign a pledge wall affirming their support for the nonviolent social change, equality and justice, freedom and peace. Daily until 3 p.m. through Jan. 23. MU Concourse.
11:30 a.m.: "Celebration 2004 Opening Ceremony," an hour-long kick-off event in the MU Lounge.
3 p.m.: "Race: The Power of an Illusion," featuring episode one of the video series - "The Difference Between Us," challenging fundamental beliefs about race, a two-hour presentation and discussion. MU Lounge.
Tuesday, Jan. 13
3:30 p.m.: "Leading Edge Ethics and Leadership," a 70-minute discussion about what it takes to model ethical leadership and learn about the many ways in which people approach ethical decisions. MU Room 207.
Wednesday, Jan. 14
11 a.m.: "The Way Home," a two-hour film and discussion about race, gender and class in the U.S. MU Room 208.
1 p.m.: Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive, through 7 p.m. MU Ballroom.
3 p.m.: "Race: The Power of an Illusion," featuring episode two of the video series - "The Story We Tell," challenging fundamental beliefs about race, a two-hour presentation and discussion. MU Lounge.
Thursday, Jan. 15
9 a.m.: Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive, through 1 p.m. MU Ballroom.
3:30 p.m.: "Leading Edge Servant Leadership," a 60-minute discussion about how individuals can make a difference in the world and in others' lives through student organizations, student leadership, and involvement on campus. MU Room 207.
5 p.m.: Birthday party for Martin Luther King Jr., a 90-minute celebration at the campus Black Cultural Center.
7 p.m.: City of Corvallis Martin Luther King Jr. Commission presentation, "Education Without Boundaries," featuring speaker Cheryl Brown Henderson, executive director of the Brown Foundation. Henderson is one of the children of the late Rev. Oliver Brown, namesake of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision of 1954, Brown vs. The Board of Education. LaSells Stewart Center.
Friday, Jan. 16
11 a.m.: "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin," two-hour video and discussion focusing on Rustin, organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the nation. MU Room 208.
3 p.m.: "Race: The Power of an Illusion," featuring episode three of the video series - "The House We Live In," a two-hour presentation and discussion. MU Lounge.
6 p.m.: "Rise and Fall of Jim Crow," a two-hour film presentation featuring parts one and two of the four-part series, which offers a look at race relations in America between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. An open forum will follow. MU Leadership Center.
Saturday, Jan. 17
6 p.m.: "Rise and Fall of Jim Crow," a two-hour presentation featuring the final two parts of the series, which traces race relations in America between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. An open forum will follow.
Monday, Jan. 19

6 p.m.: "International Perspectives on the Dream," a two-hour open forum featuring discussions with international students at OSU about what King's dream means to them. Snell Hall MU East International Forum.
Wednesday, Jan. 21
11 a.m.: "Scout's Honor," a two-hour video and discussion about the Boy Scouts of America's stance on homosexuality. MU Room 208.
7 p.m.: "An Evening of Song and Poetry," participants are invited to present poetry or songs during the two-hour event that pertain to social issues, injustice, discrimination, racism, peace, freedom, equality, and justice.
Thursday, Jan. 22
7 p.m.: A two-hour presentation of Portland photojournalist Joel Preston Smith's photographs of Iraq. Milam Auditorium.
Friday, Jan. 23
2 p.m.: "Interfaith Prayer Service," community members from different spiritual, religious, and philosophical backgrounds will spend an hour sharing prayers and thoughts for peace and social justice. MU Room 206.
