CORVALLIS - Academic excellence has paid off for five Oregon State University students who earned nearly $12,000 in scholarships and fellowships from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Phi Kappa Phi is a national scholastic honor society founded in 1897, with membership open to all fields of study. The purpose of the society is to recognize academic excellence and to encourage scholarship. The OSU chapter was founded in 1924 and is o ne of 26 general honor societies on campus.

The scholars are:

CLACKAMAS:

Paul McMenamy, liberal arts, $400 Freshman Writing Award for outstanding English composition.

CORVALLIS:

Bronwyn Roberts, liberal arts, $400 Freshman Writing Award for outstanding English composition; Kimberly Standstrom, who just completed her bachelor's in microbiology and international studies, $500 Phi Kappa Phi Chapter Award and $7,000 Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowship for graduate work in medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University.

SALEM:

Kelli Dawn Cummings, junior in psychology, $1,500 Phi Kappa Phi Tunison Scholarship.

HAWAII

PUNALAU:

Kerry Jacques, junior in exercise and sports science, $1,500 Phi Kappa Phi Tunison Scholarship.
