CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will host a three-week summer workshop of accelerated art instruction for teens this summer that is drawing interest from students all over the West Coast..

This will be the fourth year the OSU Department of Art has hosted Jumpstart. The precollege visual arts workshop offers students ages 15-18 advanced study in traditional art forms, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking, and non-traditional fields, such as design structures, digital photography, graphic design, illustration and video.

In addition to spending six hours in studio classes each day, students participate in seminars on dance, music and theater, and attend lectures by visiting professional artists and designers. Each student will produce a portfolio of work during the three weeks, that will be reviewed and exhibited. At the awards ceremony, the OSU art department will award two Jumpstart students full scholarships to Oregon State. Last year's recipients were Gairdt Lundeen of Trinidad, Calif., and Skye Walker, of Blodgett, Ore.

The workshop has grown in size and reputation with each year and now is supported by the Coca-Cola Foundation. The foundation and the OSU art department co-sponsor workshop scholarships called the Coca-Cola Gold Ribbon Awards. "The awards will permit talented students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds to attend the program," said Jim Folts, chair of OSU's art department.

Jumpstart will run from June 21 to July 10 at OSU. The summer program will include a trip to the Portland Art Museum, where the students will become teachers, assisting children attending a family day at the "Splendors of Ancient Egypt" exhibit..

Other special events include a performance by the Adefua Music and Company from Seattle, a workshop by Native American painter James Lavadour of Pendleton, a presentation by filmmaker Rose Bond of Portland, and a two-day workshop by Dan Senn, a noted sound sculptor from Seattle.

"Senn's work consists of high-tech electronic instruments that create both visual and audible environments," said John Maul, an assistant professor of art and Jumpstart director.

Another highlight will be a presentation by Harley Jessup, former art director for Industrial Light and Magic, who specializes in computer animation.

Tuition for Jumpstart is $1,195 for students who stay on campus for the three weeks; $695 for those who commute and attend. For applications or more information, contact the OSU Department of Art at 541-737-4745.
