CORVALLIS - The right to own and use private property is a cornerstone of the American dream. But what if that collides with public interests?

Can governments require public access to your property? When do environmental and land-use regulations go too far and result in a "taking?" Is land stewardship implied in our legal system?

"Property Rights, Land Stewardship and the Takings Issue," a new publication from the Oregon State University Extension Service, introduces readers to these questions and many others as it traces the evolution of 5th Amendment court decisions, examining several recent cases.

The 16-page publication, written by OSU professor emeritus of land resources management James Pease, also directs the reader to more detailed studies.
