CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will offer its second play this spring originating in ancient Greece when Aristophanes' classic comedy, "Lysistrata" hits the Withycombe Hall stage.

This student-run production features 24 cast members from the OSU student body and local community, and 18 students working on sets, costumes and properties. It will open its four-night run on Sunday, April 7, with additional performances scheduled for April 8-9 and April 14. Tickets are priced at $5, with discounts for seniors and students. Curtain time for all performances is 7:30 p.m.

OSU's performance of "Lysistrata" runs in conjunction with another University Theatre production from ancient Greece, "Antigone," which plays April 4-6 and April 11-13.

"Lysistrata" is one of the best-known and best-loved anti-war plays ever written. The title character (portrayed by Jenny Rowe) becomes so war-weary that she decides to bring all of the women of Greece together to protest the war in a rather unique fashion: They make a pact to withhold sex from their husbands, convinced this will make them conform to their will and end the fighting.

In addition, the women forcefully take over Acropolis in hopes of cutting off the flow of money financing the war. When the commissioner of public safety (Bryce Bumgarner) hears of the women's deeds, he tries to take back Acropolis by force, but finds the women are more than a match for his soldiers.

The women, however, discover that their strategy is a bit more difficult to maintain than they had thought. And to complicate matters, age-old Spartan enemies arrive.

Juliet Miller, a senior in theater arts, directs this OSU version of the classic Greek comedy. She also designed the costumes for "Lysistrata." Associate professor Richard George designed the sets and lighting; Jen Waters is assistant director, and Megan Uliano and John Nichols are stage managers.

The performance on Tuesday, April 9, will be sign language-interpreted for the hearing impaired.
