CORVALLIS - Dennis Garity, a professor of mathematics at Oregon State University, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture research at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, during the 2003-04 academic year.

Garity, an expert on geometric topology, dimension theory and topological manifolds, will teach mathematics and work on joint research with Dusan Repovs of the University of Ljubljana.

Garity is one of about 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 140 countries in the coming year through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Sen. J. William Fulbright, the program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries.

The Fulbright program, one of America's leading educational exchange activities, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural affairs. About 250,000 American and foreign university students, K-12 teachers and university faculty and professionals have participated in one of the Fulbright exchange programs. Recipients of Fulbright scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
