CORVALLIS - Jeremy King, a scholar-author who specializes in eastern European history, will give a free public lecture on Thursday, Oct. 23, at Oregon State University.

His talk, "Ethnicity: The Strange Career of a Term," begins at 4 p.m. in the Joyce Powell Leadership Room on the Memorial Union. It is free and open to the public. The lecture is the first in the Horning Lecture Series at OSU, which this year focuses on race, ethnicity and national identity in the 20th century.

King is the author of a recent study of German-Czech relations in the formation of the modern Czechoslovakian state. That study, "Budweisers into Czechs and Germans: A Local History of Bohemian Politics, 1848-1948," was published by the Princeton University Press last year.

In his OSU talk, King will present his ideas for how the concept of ethnicity was developed and has changed in the modern era as a way of describing and identifying communities and group solidarity.

The talk is co-sponsored by OSU's history department.
